Magby is a young volcanic Pokémon that was introduced in the second generation games. It was introduced as the baby form of Magmar, and in the fourth generation it becomes the first form of a three-step evolutionary line, with its new third and final form being Magmortar.

Information

Magby are commonly found in volcanic craters and has a body temperature that exceeds 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit. Magma-like blood circulates through its body, and hot embers dribble out of its mouth and nostrils when it breathes. The state of its health is determined by the quality of its fire, as it breathes yellow fire when healthy and black smoke mixed with its fire when it is fatigued. It is said that the appearance of many Magby heralds a volcanic eruption.

It erupts into Magmar at Level 30.

Magby is primarily found by hatching one from an egg laid by a Magmar. In Pokémon: Crystal Version, the daycare couple at Route 34 gives the player an egg that has an equal chance of hatching as Magby or as any of the other baby Pokémon from the second generation. Using the Pokéwalker, Magby could be caught at the Amity Meadow and Rugged Road courses, and they could be transferred from there to HeartGold and SoulSilver.

In Diamond and Pearl, Magby uncommonly appeared at Route 227 and inside Stark Mountain when LeafGreen was in the GBA slot. In White, Magby could be found at the White Forest.

Other Games

In Pokémon Puzzle Challenge, Magby could be unlocked by hatching it from the Fire Egg. In Pokémon Channel, it appeared at Camp Starlight on Tuesday nights. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was found at Secret Storage 8, Secret Storage 18, Endless Level 13 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Magby could be recruited at the first five floors of Mt. Blaze, the fifth through ninth floors of Fiery Field, the seventy-second through seventy-sixth floors of Wish Cave, and the forty-sixth through fifty-first as well as seventh-second through seventh-sixth floors of Joyous Tower, and in Explorers of Time and Darkness it could be recruited at the first eight floors of Steam Cave and Final Maze.

In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was found at Pueltown. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it appeared at Mitonga Road and Fire Temple. Magby also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Lava Zone.

• In the Pokémon anime, Magby appeared as a friend of the Pichu Bros. in the Pichu Bros. shorts. One late episode of the Johto series also featured a trainer who was trying to evolve his Magby for the Silver Conference, and it wound up evolving after fighting alongside Cyndaquil against Team Rocket. Magby have made several other minor appearances belonging to other trainers in other episodes.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, it initially made only cameo appearances in the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc, and it was among the baby Pokémon that escaped Pokémon Daycare in one chapter. Magby were eventually featured in a chapter of the Diamond/Pearl arc when Team Galactic had left a group of them behind in Fuego Ironworks to deal with interlopers like Pearl, but Pearl was able to defeat them.
