Gotoh is the elderly sage who appears as a playable unit in Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryuu to Hikari no Tsurugi and Shadow Dragon, and as a supporting character in Monshou no Nazo.

Background

Gotoh was one of the Divine Dragons who was around since ancient times. He obeyed the orders of Naga to seal his form within a Dragonstone (with his human appearance being an old man) and took on the task of protecting humans for years to come. Gotoh became one of the few surviving Divine Dragons along with Xane and the newborn Tiki. After the war in which the Earth Dragons were sealed away using the Shield of Seals, Gotoh and Xane discarded their dragonstones and thus remained permanently in their human forms.

However, they still retained power and knowledge far above that of normal humans. Gotoh in particular became an adept sage. After the Fane of Raman was raided by bandits, Gotoh spent many years searching for the Shield of Steals. He was able to find the five orbs that were to be placed on the sword, but not the shield itself. For that reason, when Medeus attacked Archanea with the Dolhr Empire, they could not seal him away with the other Earth Dragons. However, Gotoh was still able to entrust the hero Anri with Naga's sword, the Falchion, with which Anri was able to defeat Medeus for the time being.

In the year 550, Gotoh founded an academy of magic at Khadein. He taught his life lessons there in order in bring happiness for the people. He only wound up being disappointed when people used this knowledge for war and profit, which led him to disappear. However, Gotoh did eventually train two pupils to be his successors, Miloah and Gharnef. Gotoh saw Gharnef as having a weak heart, so he left the Aura tome and Khadein to Miloah. This enraged Gharnef, who stole the Dark Orb from Gotoh and used it to create the Imhullu tome, which made him invincible. Gotoh could only stand back and watch as Gharnef amassed power and re-awakened Medeus.

Book One

As the War of Darkness erupted, Gotoh began contacting the young hero Marth, who was Anri's successor, as he saw him as Archanea's last hope. He warned Marth about the capabilities of Imhullu and told him that he could create the magic that could counter it, Starlight, if Marth brought him both the Lightsphere and the Starsphere. He was first seen in Chapter 22 (17 SNES), where Michalis urged Gotoh to retreat to safety when his forces were about to battle with Marth's men. Gotoh first criticized Michalis and called him a fool for allowing him to be controlled by Gharnef, feeling that Michalis would be crushed by the weight of the guilt from his killing his father. At this point Marth finally met him, and when presented with both of the orbs, Gharnef was able to create the Starlight (although the Starsphere was shattered in the process). He then used his Warp magic to send them to Thebes so that they could face Gharnef.

In the DS version, Gotoh would send them into another dimension to awaken Nagi (another sleeping dragon) in Chapter 24x if Tiki had been defeated in a previous battle. In all versions save the Super NES version, Gotoh also joined with Marth's army for the final chapter's battle with Medeus, saying that Marth had shown him that he was mistaken in giving up on humans, as Marth had given him new hope for mankind. Following the war's end, Gotoh became the archsage of Archanea at Princess Nyna's request.

Book Two

Three years later, Gotoh was concerned by the impending awakening of the Earth Dragons. He first deployed Wendel on a task to gather the shards of the shattered Starsphere. He also took Tiki back to the Ice Dragons' Temple and put her into a sleep. This was because the Shield of Seals had to be complete to prevent her from degenerating, and otherwise he would be forced to keep her in an eternal sleep (or possibly kill her). He was also concerned by Hardin's actions against Archanea, knowing that he was under the influence of the Dark Orb and Gharnef's spirit. So Gotoh telepathically contacted Marth in Chapter 10 to warn him of Hardin's condition. He also briefly described the five orbs and offered to give Marth the Lightsphere, the only one of the five orbs that he still had, if he could travel to reach him in the Ice Dragons' Temple.

When Marth arrived at the temple, Gotoh gave him the Lightsphere and fixed the Starsphere if he had collected all of the shards. He also recognized that the Fire Emblem which Marth carried was actually the Shield of Seals. In this event, he would also allow Tiki to awaken and accompany Marth, feeling guilty for keeping her in the coma all of the time (if the Starsphere was not completed, he would be forced to keep Tiki in her slumber). After Marth completed the Shield of Seals in Chapter 20, Gotoh came to him in person to guide him in restoring the seal on the Earth Dragons. Gotoh than guided Marth through the final battles and then congratulated him afterwards.
