Rhyhorn is large and rocky quadrupedal Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. It originally had only one evolved form, Rhydon, but in the fourth generation a third and final form was added to this evolutionary line in the form of Rhyperior.

Information

Rhyhorn is covered in a thick hide and has massive bones which are reported to be a thousand times thicker than human bones. They have the strength to send a trailer park flying. They also have one-track minds and will not stop running when they charge forward until they fall asleep. It can only remember one thing at a time so it will usually forget why it is running after it starts running. Rhyhorn's four short legs make it an inept runner, so it usually only runs in one direction. They run through any and all obstacles in the way, including blocks of steel, although it will remember particular collisions that later give it pain.

Rhyhorn's charging tackles are even said to be strong enough to demolish a skyscraper. Despite their demolition skills, Rhyhorn are considered too slow witted to help people work. It evolves into Rhydon at Level 42.

In Pokémon: Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen, Rhyhorn appeared uncommonly at the Safari Zone. In Yellow, it could also be found at Cerulean Cave.

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, they rarely appeared at Victory Road. In Crystal, they were more common but appeared only during the daytime. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, Rhyhorn could also be caught at the Safari Zone's Savannah area,. and a Rhyhorn knowing Thunder Fang could be achieved by trading a Bonsly to Brock. Rhyhorn could also be caught at the Pokéwalker's Volcano Path course, from which it could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.

In Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, Rhyhorn was commonly found at the Safari Zone. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, they rarely appeared at Route 227 and Stark Mountain. In Platinum, Rhyhorn was additionally found more commonly at Route 214 and Victory Road. In White, Rhyhorn could be found at White Forest.

Rhyhorn could be found in Pokémon Pinball at the Safari Zone. In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, at appeared at the Safari Zone on the Ruby Field. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was found at Phobos Walker, Endless Level 39, Pair Trozei and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Rhyhorn could be recruited on the first four floors of Frosty Grotto, the sixty-first through seventy-third floors of Buried Relic, the fifty-eighth through sixty-first floors of Wish Cave, the thirty-first through thirty-ninth floors of Southern Cavern and the fifty-eighth through sixty-first floors of Joyous Tower.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Rhyhorn could be recruited at the eighth through fifteenth floors of Northern Desert and the first seventeen floors of Shimmer Hill. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it appeared at Volcano Cave. Rhyhorn also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Rocky Cave.

• Rhyhorn have made various, but primarily minor, appearances throughout the Pokémon anime. They have usually been shown as wild Pokémon antagonizing Ash and his friends after being disturbed or as opponents belonging to other trainers. A Rhyhorn was also among the Pokémon entered in a Pokémon race in one Kanto episode, and one Orange Islands episode featured a pink Rhyhorn.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, a Rhyhorn appeared early in the Red/Green/Blue arc belonging to Koga. After it lost to Red's Pikachu, Koga injected it with a mysterious formula that made it dangerously powerful. A normal Rhyhorn was later shown as one of Giovanni's main Pokémon and was powerful enough to defeat Red's Aerodactyl using just a tail whip.

Trivia

• Its name is a combination of "rhinoceros" and "horn", although the presence of the "y" in its name may refer to the mineral rhyolite.
