Tulip is one of the eight Gym Leaders of the Paldea region who appears as an opponent in the ninth generation games of the Pokémon series, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. She specializes in Psychic-type Pokémon.

Background

Tulip was a beautician who worked as a make-up artist in addition to her role as the Gym Leader of Alfornada Gym. She fixated on the beauty of herself and others, and she kept a busty schedule that was full of appointments and phone calls involving beauty products along with her duties as a Gym Leader. She valued the beauty of both people and Pokémon, and she considered make-up to be a type of magic that anyone could use to change their appearance. For her Gym Test, she ran a practice called the Emotional Spectrum Practice, or ESP for short (a play on ESP typically being short for the psychic ability of extra-sensory perception), in which challengers had to match the movements and emotions of the instructor. She was childhood friends with [[Dendra] and won a Pokémon battle in which the loser had to do whatever the winner wanted. For her victory, Tulip had Dendra run the ESP for her.

In Scarlet/Violet, Florian/Juliana came to face her after completing her Gym Test. After finishing a call about a beauty product, Tulip told the trainer that they were cute and commended them for keeping their Pokémon beautiful and clean as well. Florian/Juliana proceeded to defeat her in battle. She was left surprised that the trainer's beauty rivaled her own, but ultimately commended them for their impressive skills. Tulip gave the trainer her Gym Badge and TM120: Psychic. She also took a picture with the young trainer in which they did a pose together, but she quickly forbade them from posting it on social media, as she believed that her make-up had started to run after all of the moving and sweating she did during their battle. She proceeded to leave to fix it before her next appointment. During the post-game, Florian/Juliana could return to Alfornada to challenge Tulip to a rematch as part of the Gym Leader evaluation that they were conducting in Geeta's place. Tulip noticed that they had become more refined since last time and was glad that Geeta sent them instead due to not being a fan of hers. Florian/Juliana defeated Tulip again, and she commended them for having both beauty and strength. She then remarked that there were many in her line of work who often fade away into obscurity and expressed her hope that Florian/Juliana did not fall to such a fate. She was eager to see how far their talent could go.

Trivia

  • Her Japanese name is Lip, derived from 'tulip' and likely referencing lipstick or lips in general as well, due to her being a beautician. Her English name is directly named after the tulip.
  • While the Gym Leaders in Scarlet and Violet can be battled in any order, the levels of Tulip's team are the second-highest in the game, making her the seventh Gym Leader in the implied order.
  • Her image can be seen on a billboard advertising beauty products in Levincia.
  • She claims that she does not like Geeta because she believes that her 'bewitching aura' overlaps with her own style too much.
  • Tulip also claims that 'sadness' is not in her vocabulary, and the closest thing she feels is 'the beauty of surprise'.
