Chansey is a kindhearted Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. It was originally believed to have no evolutionary line, but it was later shown to evolve into Blissey in the second generation and from the baby form Happiny in the fourth generation.

Information

Chansey evolves from a Happiny when it levels up while holding the Oval Stone during daytime. When breeding, Chansey will usually give birth to other Chansey unless the parent is holding a Luck Incense, which causes the baby to hatch as a Happiny. Chansey themselves are known for being rare and elusive Pokémon, being few in numbers and difficult to capture. They are said to bring happiness to those who get them due to their kind nature.

A Chansey lays several nutritious eggs a day. It will not share its eggs with those who have evil in their hearts, but their compassionate nature leads them to share their eggs with any injured person or Pokémon that they come across. The eggs are apparently delicious enough that even people who are not hungry will eagerly devour them. A Chansey usually walks carefully in order to protect the egg that it keeps in its pouch, but it can also run away very quickly. Chansey evolves into Blissey when it levels up with a high amount of happiness.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen, Chansey rarely appear at the Safari Zone and (in all except FireRed/LeafGreen) Cerulean Cave. Nonplayable Chansey were also featured as assistants in the Pokémon Centers of Yellow to reflect the anime.

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, they were very rarely found on Routes 13, 14 and 15, although in HeartGold/SoulSilver they became more common on Route 13 during swarms. They could also appear at the Safari Zone's Meadow area if enough Plains objects were present in HeartGold/SoulSilver.

In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Chansey rarely appeared at Routes 209 and 210 as well as being one of the Pokémon randomly placed in the Trophy Garden by Mr. Backlot on a daily basis,

Other Games

In Pokémon Snap, Chansey could be photographed at the beach. In Pokémon Pinball, it appeared at the Safari Zone. Within Pokémon Stadium 2, Chansey was featured in the "Egg Emergency" minigame where the player had to control Chansey and Blissey catching falling eggs while avoiding falling Voltorb. In Pokémon Channel, Chansey was featured in the Chansey's fortune channel. Chansey also appeared in Pokémon Trozei! at Secret Storage 15, Endless Level 18, Forever Level 18 and Mr. Who's Den.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Chansey could be recruited on the fiftieth, sixtieth and seventy-seventh floors of Joyous Tower. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it could be recruited at Happy Outlook, and a non-playable Chansey ran the Chansey Day Care in Treasure Town. Chansey also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Silent Forest.

Video Games

• ln Super Smash Bros., Chansey could appear from the elevator at Silph Co., while in Melee it was one of the Pokémon that could be randomly summoned from the Poké ball item. In both games Chansey's effect was to repeatedly toss eggs, some of which were containers for items and others which were themselves health items. It could also be knocked out by the other players. Chansey had its own trophy in Melee as well as a float of it in the Poké Floats level.

Other Media

• Chansey have made appearances throughout the Pokémon anime where they (and later Blissey as well) have commonly been shown working as nurses for the Nurse Joys in the Pokémon Centers of all regions except for Unova. Brock's Happiny also evolved into a Chansey in one of the last episodes of the Sinnoh series.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, A Chansey was shown belonging to Daisy Oak which used to belong to Professor Oak.

Trivia

• Its name is a play on "chance", in reference to its rarity.
