Salamence is a winged, dragon-like Pokémon that was introduced in the third generation games. It is the third and final form in Bagon's evolutionary line.

Information

Salamence evolves from Shelgon at Level 50. Its existence is rooted in Bagon's inert desire to have wings and fly. The desire is said to have triggered a sudden mutation in the Pokémon's cells, which allowed it spring magnificent wings. Salamence are known to express their joy by wheeling through the sky and breathing fire. However, it becomes uncontrollable when enraged and destroys everything with shredding claws and fire. Salamence have scorched fields and mountains alike,

Salamence has not been found in the wild and can only be obtained by evolving a Shelgon.

Other Games

A Shadow Salamence could be snagged from Eldes at Citdark Isle in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, and after being purified it could be traded to any of the third generation color versions. Salamence could only be obtained through evolution in Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams and Explorers of Time and Darkness. In Pokémon Trozei!, it appeared at Endless Level 34, Forever Level 83, Pair Trozei and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Ranger, it had to be captured at the Jungle Relic during a mission. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was found at Vien Forest and Crysta Cave. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it appeared at Mt. Sorbet, the Dark Temple and the Light Temple. Salamence also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Granite Zone.

• In the Pokémon anime, Salamence was first featured in the sixth movie as the main Pokémon of the antagonistic Butler, and he used it for aerial transportation. Within the Hoenn series, it was also featured briefly as one of the most powerful Pokémon in Drake's team. In other episodes, Salamence have been shown belonging to Silver (not the character from the games) and Pokémon Hunter J, amongst other minor appearances.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, a Salamence played a vital role in the backstory of the Ruby/Sapphire arc. Ruby had defeated a Salamence in a Pokémon battle when he was just a child, but this caused the Salamence to go on a rampage that scarred him and caused the accidental release of Rayquaza, which his father took the blame for. The shame from this event caused Ruby to suppress his battling prowess, but it also inspired Sapphire to develop her own training skills. A different Salamence was also featured during the Emerald arc as Tucker's main Pokémon.

• Its name seems to be combination of "salamander" (which is a smaller reptile) with "menace" or "violence".
