Poo is one of the playable heroes of Earthbound. He makes up one of the Chosen Four, along with Ness, Paula, and Jeff.

Background[edit]

Earthbound[edit]

Poo was prince of Dalaam, a country to the east. He was once popular with the girls there until he became serious about his training. When he was first seen, his master sent him to complete his Mu Training at the Place of Emptiness. There, after clearing his mind in meditation, he was met by a spirit of his ancient lineage (or a vision of him), who proceeded to convince Poo to give up each of his body parts to him until only his mind remained. He then communicated directly with Poo's mind, asking him to let him take his mind and possess him, and that point Poo was awakened from his trance to the news that he had completed his training.

After returning to the palace, Poo's master told Poo about a message from Eternity and that he was destined to join a boy named Ness in a battle against the great evil, Giygas. Poo then learned the art of teleportation and teleported to Summers, where he met and joined with Ness's group, introducing himself as Ness's servant. At the local museum, Poo was then able to help them get into a certain wing using a ruby that Poo possessed, where they learned the secrets of a pyramid in Scaraba. Poo accompanied them for some time, but after they exited the pyramid, the mysterious Star Master whisked Poo away to teach him the way of the Starstorm.

Poo was absent for some time and returned to Ness and the others while they were exploring the Deep Darkness, arriving just in time to save them from Master Puke by destroying him with PK Starstorm. Poo then rejoined the party and fought loyally alongside them in their last trials. When the time to fight Giygas drew near, the Star Master appeared again in the Lost Cave and imparted the advanced PSI Starstorm Omega ability upon Poo. Soon afterwards, Dr. Andonuts transferred their minds (accompanied by their spirits) into robotic bodies so that they could travel back in time for the final battle with Giygas. After Giygas was destroyed, the robotic bodies were left wrecked in the past while the Chosen Four's spirits returned to their bodies in the present, reviving them in their original condition.

At this point, it was time to leave, with Poo setting off first. He promised to lead Dalaam using the experience of his adventure and showed a strange ability that he had learned as a child, PSI Farewell - in which he teleported away while leaving behind three boxes containing letters for Ness, Jeff and Paula from people they knew, while saying that he would see them again someday.

Mother 3[edit]

Poo himself never appears, but there are references to him in New Pork City.

Abilities[edit]

Due to Poo's martial arts training, he can do as much damage unarmed as the other characters do with weapons. He is unique in that there is only one set of a weapon and armor/accessories that can raise his stats throughout the game: the Sword of Kings, Cloak of Kings, Bracer of Kings and Diadem of Kings. Poo is accomplished in PSI and can use his psychic abilities to attack and heal. Poo also has the ability to transform into the form of an enemy. The following is a list of the PSI abilities that he learns in the game:

  • Lifeup - A health restoration ability which Poo learns three of the four forms of. Lifeup a (known from his introduction) restores 75-125 HP of one ally, Lifeup B (known from his introduction) heals 225-375 HP of one ally, and Lifeup y (learned at Level 46) heals all HP of a single ally.
  • Healing - An ability that heals status effects, which Poo learns all four forms of. Healing a (known from his introduction) heals cold, sunstroke and sleep; Healing B (known from his introduction) heals all of the earlier effects plus poison, nauseousness, crying and feeling strange; Healing y (learned at Level 36) heals all of the above plus paralysis, being turned into a diamond and has a 75 percent chance of reviving a fallen ally; and Healing Omega (learned at Level 52) heals all of the earlier conditions as well as always being able to revive fallen comrades.
  • PSI Freeze - A psychic ice attack that has a chance of freezing enemies, which he learns three of the four forms of: PSI Freeze a and B (both known from his introduction) as well as PSI Freeze y (learned at Level 33).
  • PSI Thunder - A psychic electric attack that can possibly hit multiple times, but with a strong chance of missing. Poo learns all four forms of the move: PSI Thunder a and B (known from his introduction), PSI Thunder y (learned at Level 41), and PSI Thunder Omega (learned at Level 55).
  • Shield - This creates shields which protect allies from physical attacks. Shield a (known from introduction) shields one ally, Shield E (known from introduction) shields all allies, Shield B (learned at Level 16) creates a power shield that reflects attacks around one ally, and Shield Omega (learned at Level 51) creates a Power Shield around all allies.
  • Teleport - A move which allows Poo and his allies to teleport to one of several preset locations. Teleport a (learned at Level 17) requires the group to have running space, while Teleport B (learned at Level 18) simply needs enough space for the group to spin in a circle.
  • PSI Magnet - A move that drains PP from enemies and thus is the only PSI ability that does not consume PP. PSI Magnet a (learned at Level 21) affects one enemy, while PSI Magnet B (learned at Level 27) affects all enemies.
  • Brainshock - A psychic ability that confuses enemies, which Poo exclusively learns both forms of. Brainshock a (learned at Level 24) makes one enemy feel strange, while Brainshock B (learned at Level 44) makes all enemies feel strange.
  • PK Starstorm - Poo's most special move that he learns at certain points in the storyline from the Star Master, which causes meteors to attack all enemies. He learns PK Starstorm a when he rejoins the party at Deep Darkness, and he learns PK Starstorm Omega when the group prepares for the final battle.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • Within the Super Smash Bros. series, Ness's moveset contains some abilities that only Poo and/or Paula could learn in Earthbound, making Ness into somewhat of an amalgamation of the three characters. This includes Poo's ultimate attack, PK Starstorm, which appeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as Ness's Final Smash. He is mentioned in the trophy for PK Starstorm as having taught it to Ness. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Poo and Paula physically appear with Ness when he uses that Final Smash.
    • Through the series, Poo has also been represented as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee, a sticker in Brawl and as an Ace Primary Spirit in Ultimate. Poo's Spirit comes with a bonus for power of PSI Attacks. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Poo's Spirit would possess Ryu with enhanced stats.

Trivia[edit]

  • He is the only character from Earthbound who does not seem to be modeled after a character from Mother.
  • Poo's name is actually chosen by the player, but Poo is his canon name as well as the first default name listed. The Japanese version also included some special themed names among the lists of default names, with some of Poo's being Kinopio (after the then-character Toad from Mario Bros.) and George (after George Harrison from The Beatles).
