Samurai Goroh is a F-Zero racer and one of Captain Falcon's most notable rivals. Although he claims to be a bounty hunter, he is actually the leader of an intergalactic ring of bandits who often used the Red Canyon for their hideout.

Background[edit]

Main Series[edit]

Before his career as a F-Zero pilot, Samurai Goroh was rumored to have been in the Internova Police at the same time as Captain Falcon, a possible reason for their rivalry. Although his homeworld is unknown, its been said that he is a Japanese American. Despite his large frame, he is extremely athletic and can perform multiple backflips. Despite his skills in racing and fighting, Captain Falcon always manages to show him up.

Besides Captain Falcon, Goroh has made his own share of foes in the past. Despite being friends with Antonio Guster, Goroh turned him in as soon as the Federation put a price on his head. The two have been rivals ever since then, with Guster having joined the Grand Prix just to get revenge on Goroh. He also has a son, Dai Goroh, who is an expert swordsman and admires his father. Despite this, Goroh has little luck controlling his son.

Samurai Goroh competed in the first F-Zero race in 2560. Competing against Pico, Dr. Stewart, and Captain Falcon; though Falcon was the one to win the tournament.

Goroh presumably returned to his criminal activities when the F-Zero races were closed, but returned to the race track when the F-Zero races began again as the F-Zero X tournament. He's raced two more years since then. He lost both Grand Prix tournaments to Captain Falcon. During the second one, he tried to corner Captain Falcon in Red Canyon. He made a deal that if Falcon couldn't beat him to the finish line - in a valley full of falling rocks, Goroh would get Falcon's ship. Captain Falcon ended up winning and later defeated Samurai Goroh in the Grand Prix. That was also the same year that his son, Dai Goroh, first joined the Grand Prix. People have already noted that Dai may be a better swordsman and pilot than his father, despite being much younger.

Samurai Goroh's F-Zero GX movie, Moonlight Outlaw; Samurai Goroh, shows him racing in a simulation race against a simulation opponent. He then slashes his sword around making the simulation opponent crash. He continues on until he stops to let Silver Neelson cross the street. But he doesn't wait for him to finish and races onward knocking him over. However, Silver somehow catches up to Goroh and smacks him in the head with his cane.

GP Legend[edit]

Goroh-Anime.jpg

In the anime-inspired games F-Zero: GP Legend and Climax, Samurai Goroh is a space thief whose motto is "Steal, but never kill." He is married to Lisa Brilliant, but apparently has no son yet. Antonio Guster is his brother-in-law due to Antonio being Lisa's brother.

He has his own story path in GP Legend. He gets in a race in Red Canyon and has trouble performing due to a poisoned needle being hidden in his cockpit. He meets up with Lisa shortly after and accuses her of poisoning him, but she won't hear what he has to say unless he beats her in a race. She claims to not know who he is and Goroh concludes she has amnesia. He can't do anything about it because his own life is on the line and he continues on.

He ends up running into Captain Falcon who was in the middle of hunting down a bounty. Goroh challenges Falcon to a race and after winning his 10th race against him (after 165 losses), he concludes that Falcon couldn't have been the one who did it. He ends up at the Sand Ocean and ends up running into Black Shadow, but is able to outrun him in a race. He finally tracks Antonio down at the Grand Prix after figuring out he was the one behind it. After beat Guster in the Grand Prix, Antonio is forced to give up the antidote, allowing Goroh to return to his life of crime and villainy.

Fire Stringray[edit]

Sting Ray.jpg
  • Number: 05
  • Creator: Toraemon Echigoya
  • Engine: RS-5060x2
  • Weight: 1960kg
  • Body: A
  • Boost: D
  • Grip: B

The Fire Stingray is notable for being the fastest of the four original machines. Despite the speed, its large weight means it has low acceleration and takes longer to take off, which can prove problematic in F-Zero races where hitting other ships is an inevitability. Despite the low amount of boost, the Stingray makes up with it for a tight grip that allows Goroh to navigate corners easily.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

Goroh in the F-Zero X Expansion Pack
  • In the F-Zero X Expansion Pack for the 64DD, Goroh is the pilot of the Super Stingray. Interestingly enough, he shows up without his classic sunglasses and head gear.
  • In the Super Smash Bros. series, Samurai Goroh initially made a cameo appearance racing Captain Falon in the intro sequence of Super Smash Bros. Melee and could later be called into battle as an Assist Trophy starting in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Once summoned, he'll use his sword to slash at other fighters before vanishing. He is also represented by a trophy in Melee, a trophy and two stickers (from F-Zero and F-Zero X) in Brawl, a trophy in the 3DS/Wii U Super Smash Bros. and a Legend-rank Primary Spirit (with the added effect of boosting speed) in Ultimate.

Trivia[edit]

  • According to Samurai Goroh's victory interviews in F-Zero GX, he is known to drink after his victories.
  • According to their victory interviews, Bio Rex thinks all the racers look delicious, except for Samurai Goroh. Digi-Boy finds him fascinating and Princia Ramode admits to liking him. Daigoroh actually owns a Samurai Goroh action figure.
  • His T-Shirt translates to hageshii (激) which means "rough" or "violent". In GP Legend, his shirt instead reads "katana" (刀).
