Type | Bird |
Debut | Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island |
The Goonie is a type of bird that appears has a recurring appearance in several Yoshi games. It is a type of enemy that can also be used as a platform.
Information[edit]
The default form of the Goonie is an oval-shaped bird with large wings. They fly through the air, always moving in the same direction, and they usually appear endlessly throughout parts of levels. Goonies usually do not actively try to harm enemies and will keep moving in the same direction, although a character will be harmed if colliding with them. There are also some instances in which Goonies carry Shy Guys or bombs to drop on Yoshi. Yoshi can jump on the backs of Goonies without harming them and use them on platforms, although Yoshi will also weigh down the Goonie in the process.
The Goonie's most basic variation is the Flightless Goonie. If a Goonie is attacked by either an egg, another enemy being spit at it, or being swallowed and spit back out, then a Goonie will lose its wings and become a Flightless Goonie. Other Flightless Goonies appear separately from Goonies that have been attacked. As Flightless Goonies, they run around quickly on the ground and can be defeated through normal tactics. This includes jumping on them, which typically does not harm normal Goonies. Flightless Goonies often appear in groups.
There is also a heavier pair of variations on the enemy: the Hefty and Bowling Goonies. They are large, rotund versions of Goonies. The Hefty Goonie is the winged variation that bounces around instead of flying, due to being too heavy. It can lose its wings through the same methods as a normal Goonie, at which point it becomes a Bowling Goonie. The Bowling Goonie is the hefty equivalent of the Flightless Goonie and move by rolling around. They can also be used as plaforms and can only be defeated by eggs or a Ground Pound. While a Hefty Goonie can be eaten by Yoshi, Bowling Goonies cannot.
Finally, there are skeletal versions of the Goonies: the Skeleton Goonies and Flightless Skeleton Goonies. The main difference is that Skeleton Goonies fall apart when jumped on and cannot be used as platforms. Skeleton Goonies also are known to carry bombs to drop on Yoshi.
Appearances[edit]
The Goonies and all of their variations originally appeared in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Goonies continued to appear in most of the following Yoshi games: Yoshi's Story, Yoshi Touch & Go, Yoshi's Island DS, Yoshi's New Island, Yoshi's Woolly World and Yoshi's Crafted World. Flightless and both variations of Skeleton Goonies appeared in most of those games as well, but both were absent from Yoshi's Story, and the Skeleton Goonies were also absent from Yoshi's Crafted World. Bowling Goonies also reappeared in a level of Yoshi's New Island.
In Yoshi's Island DS, a single Hefty Goonie appears and is turned into a boss character by Kamek's magic. Known as Moltz the Very Goonie, it was featured as the mid-boss of World 5. This marked the only instance of any type of Goonie as a boss, as well as the only Goonie character.
In Tetris Attack, a Goonie was seen sleeping on a cloud in Lakitu's stage. Goonies have also made cameo appearances in Paper Mario, Mario Kart: Super Circuit (at Cheep-Cheep Island) and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. Flightless Skeleton Goonies also appear in the background of the Fury Volcano minigame in Super Princess Peach.
Other Appearances[edit]
Video Games[edit]
- In the Super Smash Bros. series, Goonies have appeared in the background of the Yoshi's Story stage that originally appeared in Super Smash Bros. Melee and the Yoshi's Island stage that was originally in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The Goonie has also been represented by a sticker (using art from Yoshi's Island DS) in Brawl.
Trivia[edit]
