Andy is a Commanding Officer from the Orange Star army who was featured as the the protagonist of Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising.

Background

The primary thing known about Andy's past is that his parents repaired old junkers, and that he had multiple sisters. Andy attributed his own love of tools and repairing machines to his parents' influence, and he implied that his sisters were similar. Andy was an excitable young boy who could be immature and impulsive, with a tendency to rush directly into battle without thinking things out. Andy was still quite friendly and was known to be fiercely loyal to his friends, to the point where he would do anything for them.

Advance Wars

In the early missions of Advance Wars, Andy was training under Nell as a Commanding Officer for the Orange Star military in Cosmo Land. Nell tried to encourage him to think his strategies out more and taught him about various units while helping him to repel the invading Blue Moon forces that were under Olaf's command. After several training missions, Andy was allowed to act on his own as a CO and took part in more battles on his own against Olaf and later Grit. He was also soon joined by Max and later Sami. Andy and Max quickly formed a competitive brotherly bond, with both of them having tendencies to rush headlong into battle. Sami also befriended Andy, but she tended to tease him about what little thought he put into things. Andy later mentioned that Sami never let him touch the good tools, while Max would tease him by holding tools out of his reach.

As the campaign carried on, Andy had a confusing encounter with Eagle of Green Earth, who claimed that Andy had led an attack on his country, despite Andy having never seen Eagle before. Afterwards, they passed into Gold Comet, where they had skirmishes with Kanbei, who confused their passing through the land with an invasion. Soon afterwards, Sonja separated Andy, Max and Sami in order to individually test them and assess their abilities. She was able to lure Andy away from the others simply by tricking him into talking about tools with an automated hologram of herself. The hologram powered down once it was time for Andy's assessment. She ultimately concluded that Andy was lacking in both weak points and strengths, but because of that, he was able to keep on moving and repair whatever mistakes he might make, while also being able to call on friends like Max and Sami for help. After several more battles with Eagle and Drake, the truth was revealed: a powerful fifth force known as the Black Hole had created a clone of Andy who had invaded Green Earth and other countries in order to stir up warfare among the countries and leave them weakened for Black Hole's invasion. After the truth came out, Eagle came to befriend Andy.

During the final mission, Sonja's attempt to strike at Sturm, the leader of Black Hole, had failed and resulted in her capture. Andy proceeded to team up with two other COs in a strike on Black Hole's base. Sonja warned them to run away from Black Hole's overwhelming forces, but Andy was singlemindedly determined to save Sonja. Ultimately, they succeeded in defeating Sturm and saving Sonja, and peace returned to Cosmo Land for a while.

Black Hole Rising

After defeating Sturm, he was only too ready to face him again during the second invasion.

Dual Strike

However, like Nell, he stayed in Macro Land during Black Hole's invasion of Omega Land. While his real self did not appear in the storyline, he was mentioned and could be played as

This did not stop him from once again being cloned. Interestingly, his second clone reacted differently. Before dying, his clone felt proud to have been a copy of the real Andy.

Gameplay

Andy is a 'balanced' CO who has no advantages or weaknesses on any map. His primary usefulness comes from being only one of two COs capable of healing his units.

• Hyper Repair - Andy's regular CO Power, it repairs all units for 2 damage.
• Hyper Upgrade - Andy's Super CO Power, it repairs all units for 5 damage. Also increases offensive power.

• In the Super Smash Bros. series, Andy has been represented as a sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and as a Primary Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. When fighting against him in a Spirit battle, Andy's Spirit would possess Dr. Mario and attack alongside a group of small Solid Snakes representing the Advance Wars infantry.

Trivia

• Until Dual Strike, he was the only Orange Star CO dressed in red.
• In Dual Strike, he and Hawke get an attack bonus when they Tag Team together.
