Debut Pokémon: Ruby/Sapphire Versions

Courtney is one of the Admins of Team Magma who appeared as a recurring opponent in Pokémon: Ruby Version and the remake Omega Ruby.

Background[edit]

Courtney's personality is notably different between her appearances. In Ruby, she is playful, energetic and boastful, and she had a tendency to break into evil laughter, even upon defeat. In the Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire remakes, she has a more reserved disposition. Her thoughts were more drawn-out and stilted, and she tended to speak in a robotic manner, including one-word sentences and using terms like "analyzing" and "deleting" to describe her actions. Her words were also often accompanied by a musical note, implying that she may be humming or singing her words.

Regardless of the version, Courtney was a prominent Magma Admin who was dedicated to Maxie's vision of a new world. In Omega Ruby, their operation to that end was known as Project Azoth.

Ruby Version[edit]

Courtney was first seen at the Weather Institute. She had attacked it in order to steal Castform for Team Magma. When Brendan/May stood to oppose her, she found the young trainer's defiance to be entertaining and described them as disgustingly cute. After being defeated in the following battle, Courtney decided that it was time to retreat, but she assured Brendan/May that Team Magma had other plans and that they had not seen the last of them.

When it was time for Maxie to awaken Groudon, Courtney accompanied him to the Seafloor Cavern, and Brendan/May had to battle her before encountering Maxie. She was surprised and impressed that the trainer managed to catch up to them without using a submarine. Courtney battled them in an attempt to avenge her loss at the Weather Institute, only to be defeated again. Courtney proceeded to commend the trainer's strength and lamented that they were not a fellow Team Magma member.

Omega Ruby[edit]

In Omega Ruby, Zinnia reported to her from the Petalburg Woods as part of a recon team after Brendan/May prevented the theft of the Devon Parts. Courtney made her first proper appearance at the Southern Island, where she and some Team Magma members were targeting Latios in an attempt to steal its Mega Stone. Brendan/May and Steven Stone stood in their way, and they managed to defeat Courtney and a Magma Grunt in a double battle. Her words afterward implied that she was locking onto Brendan/May as a new target and would commence some kind of experiment involving them forever, before she proceeded to retreat. Courtney was battled a second time at Mt. Pyre. After being beaten, she told the trainer that she found them to be interesting and looked forward to when they could fight again.

After the Submarine Explorer 1 was upgraded, Courtney stayed behind at the Magma Hideout to hold off Brendan/May while Maxie escaped to the Seafloor Cavern to wake Groudon. Courtney was defeated again, but she succeeded in buying Maxie time to escape. She proceeded to give Brendan/May a hint about where to find Maxie, in hopes that the trainer would come to dream the same dreams as her and the rest of Team Magma. She believed that it would be impossible for Maxie to be stopped at that point. Despite that, Groudon's threat was ultimately suppressed, and Maxie was left humbled and remorseful.

Courtney was left feeling as if Brendan/May had broken Maxie, and so she sought revenge during the Delta Episode. She was initially found at Petalburg Town, where she cornered Wally in an attempt to steal his Key Stone, only to find that it was already missing. Brendan/May arrived at that moment, and Courtney attempted to steal their Key Stone instead, only to be defeated again. She went ahead to Meteor Falls and secured a new Key Stone for herself. Afterwards, she led a group of Team Magma grunts in an attack on the Mossdeep Space Center. She stole the interdimensional shifter and planned to use her Mega Stone to set off all of the Infinity Energy that was stored within the rocket there (which was supposed to be used to repelan oncoming meteor). The ensuing explosion would have taken out all of them, including herself, and she saw it as a way of accomplishing Project Azoth's end goal of renewing the world. Brendan/May and Steven stopped her by defeating her and a grunt in one last double battle. After Courtney was defeated, the shifter and her Key Stone were both taken by Zinnia, and she realized that Maxie's Key Stone was being targeted too.

In the aftermath of the Delta Episode, Courtney returned to Maxie and apologize for her actions. Maxie forgave her and took responsibility for the effect he had on her actions, and Courtney proceeded to cry. She then remained at the Magma Hideout and would greet Brendan/May in a friendly manner upon future visits.

Alpha Sapphire[edit]

In Alpha Sapphire, she made a minor appearance in the postgame along with Maxie and Tabitha. The three of them had just arrived in the Battle Resort, and Wally had accidentally bumped into them while passing by. Courtney was bothered at being called 'ma'am' by the child and wanted to make him cry. They then spoke to Brendan/May. Courtney noted that the trainer seemed fun and proceeded to lock onto a new target.

Pokémon Roster[edit]

In Ruby, she has a Numel/Camerupt and Mightyena for both battles with her, with the Numel evolving between the two battles.

In Omega Ruby, she only ever uses a Camerupt in all battles with her. For the final battle, her Camerupt uses Mega Evolution.

In Other Pokémon Games[edit]

In Pokémon Masters EX, Courtney and her Camerupt (capable of Mega Evolving) appeared as a playable sync pair that could be recruited at random through the Sync Pair Scout starting in August 2022. This appearance was based on the Omega Ruby version. Within the game's story events, she first made a cameo appearance at the end of the "Masters of Land and Sea" Story Event, in which she and Tabitha showed up on Pasio to rejoin Maxie. Afterwards, she was featured in the Villain Arc chapter "Hoenn: Deltas of Land, Sea and Sky". It was shown that although Maxie and Tabitha were trying to be cautious about using Groudon, Courtney was convinced that Maxie's real wishes were to defeat Team Aqua. After Groudon and Kyogre went out of control and started battling each other, Courtney convinced herself that Team Aqua was responsible. She was the one to find Groudon, at which point she was manipulated by a grunt (Petrel in disguise) into using Groudon herself to battle Team Aqua. She formed a sync bond with Groudon, but in such a way that caused her to be influenced by Groudon's rampage and become less reasonable. Courtney proceeded to battle Matt, who had similarly been tricked into forming the same type of bond with Kyogre. Maxie was able to help her calm down while clarifying that this was not her will, and Courtney was freed from the bond with Groudon after the outside forces causing their rampage were stopped by other trainers. In the aftermath of the conflict, Courtney and Matt issued apologies together for their behavior. During the Galar chapter, Courtney took part in Lear and Rose's Pokémon tournament as part of Rose's side on Maxie's behalf. She was partnered with Tabatha and Oleana for a match, which Oleana ended up winning for them. Courntey was open about not being invested in the tournament beyond her loyalty to Maxie.

Other Appearances[edit]

In Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Courtney appeared in the Ruby/Sapphire arc. She, Tabitha and a new character named Blaise were known as the Three Fires of Team Magma. She was known to combine the juices of different berries to produce various substances to help her during missions, such as adhesives and corrosives. While acting as an antagonist throughout the arc, she also developed an infatuation with Ruby, and she ultimately joined the heroes as an ally due to feeling that Maxie and Archie had gone out of control. Courtney seemingly died during the final battle of the arc, but she was restored to life when Celebi reversed time. She went on to live a normal life and cultivated berries. Afterwards, a new Courtney was featured in the Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire arc, based on the version from the Omega Ruby game. She was part of Neo Team Magma, and it was retconned that the name of Courtney was a codename given to Magma Admins.
  • Courtney was featured in an episode of the Pokémon Generations anime. As in Omega Ruby, she stayed behind at the Magma Hideout to battle the protagonist (shown as Brendan in this episode). The episode was centered around a vision she experienced of Primal Groudon attacking Team Magma. Despite that vision, she stuck to the plan, and the episode ended with her about to begin her battle against Brendan.

Trivia[edit]

  • Her name may be a play on 'country', as it is a type of land. Her Japanese name is Kagari, a play on the Japanese word for a bonfire.
  • In Sapphire and Emerald, she only makes cameo appearances among other Team Magma members.
  • Shelly acts as her Team Aqua counterpart in the third generation games, paralleling her roles in Sapphire and Emerald. In the remakes, it is instead Matt who acts as her counterpart and parallels her role in Alpha Sapphire.
  • Courtney and Tabitha's positions also seem to be swapped in the remakes. In the original games, it was Courtney who accompanied Maxie to awaken Groudon while Tabitha stayed behind at the hideout. In the remakes, Courtney was the one to stay behind while Tabitha accompanied Maxie.
