The Greil Mercenaries is a mercenary group that appears in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and its sequel, Radiant Dawn. In Path of Radiance, the Greil Mercenaries are the main group of the game and make up most of the game's initial playable characters.
Background[edit]
The mercenary group was originally founded by Greil after he moved from Gallia to Crimea. They were based in a fortress that would later be known as Greil's Retreat. The initial members included Titania and Soren, whom had came with Greil from Gallia. They slowly gathered more members in their various missions. Some, like Titania, were proud of their work, but others, such as Shinon, found their work lowly and wanted something with more money and higher status. However, Greil kept his own son Ike out of action for a long time until Greil finally admitted him into the group in "Prologue: Mercenaries".
Path of Radiance[edit]
During the events of Path of Radiance, the Greil Mercenaries experienced an internal conflict accompanying the news of Daein's crippling invasion of Crimea. Some wanted to help Crimea due to all the support they had lent the mercenaries over the years, but others wanted to help Daein so that they did not cross the larger force. Greil eventually decided to send some mercenaries on a scouting mission, but they were attacked by Daein troops and discovered the Crimean princess Elincia, whose existence had been kept a secret. Once more the mercenaries argued over whether they should work for Elincia and escort her to Gallia, or hand her over to Daein. But it soon became apparent that Daein planned to kill them all regardless of their decision, so they chose to protect the princess.
Along the path to Gallia, the mercenaries split up, and Ike was put in charge of the group protecting the princess while Greil and other senior members distracted the brunt of the Daein forces. After Elincia was brought to Gallia, Ike brought the mercenaries back to find Greil. They were eventually reunited, but Greil was killed that night in battle with the Black Knight. Despite his youth, Ike inherited control of the company. This caused several members to be outraged and leave. Ike slowly grew into his new position with help from Titania and Soren, and he decided not to change the name of the company to honor his father's memory.
It was then decided that the Greil Mercenaries would continue traveling with Elincia as her escort en route to Begnion. They received a hefty sum of money from the Gallian king, Caineghis. Along the journey they also gathered various new followers, and a caravan of merchants traveled with them as well. In Begnion, they performed a variety of missions for the apostle/empress Sanaki which helped to reform Begnion's society. After it was decided that Sanaki would aid Elincia, the Greil Mercenaries all became part of the Crimean Liberation Army, with Ike, now a general, heading it.
After the war with Daein ended, the Greil Mercenaries returned to the base in Crimea. Ike helped with Crimea's reconstruction, but ultimately he decided to give up his new title and return to Greil's Retreat to continue leading the mercenary company.
Radiant Dawn[edit]
In Radiant Dawn, the Greil Mercenaries were first seen at the end of "Part 2: Of Countries and Kings", when they had been hired to keep an eye on Crimea from the shadows. They finally acted to save Lucia from being hanged by Ludveck and his minions. They were then approached by Ranulf in the opening of "Part 3: Intersecting Vows", who convinced them to accompany the Laguz Alliance Army in battle with Begnion. After the armies split up in "Part 4: Gods and Men", the division containing a majority of the Greil Mercenaries was known as the Greil Army.
The status of the Greil Mercenaries is uncertain after the end of Radiant Dawn. Ike is known to have departed for lands unknown, with Soren leaving with him if they had A Rank Support. It is unknown if a new leader was chosen or who it was, but it is said that Titania resumed her post of deputy commander.
Roster[edit]
Leadership[edit]
- Greil- Original leader.
- Ike- Second leader following Greil's death. He leaves after the end of Radiant Dawn.
- The leader following Ike's depature, if any, is unknown.
Senior Members[edit]
- Titania- The deputy commander.
- Soren- The staff officer. It is implied that he leaves the mercenaries after Radiant Dawn as he either never uses his talents for anyone other than Ike in his default ending, or he leaves with Ike in their shared ending.
- Gatrie- A senior member who leaves after Ike becomes leader in Chapter 8. He returns and rejoins the mercenaries in "Chapter 13: A Guiding Wind". He is known to become a famous mercenary after Radiant Dawn although it is unspecified if he stays with the Greil Mercenaries.
- Shinon- A senior member who leaves after Ike becomes leader in Chapter 8 and joins with Daein forces. He returns in "Chapter 18: Crimea Marches" and rejoins following the battle depending on how he is defeating. His Radiant Dawn ending suggests he leaves the Greil Mercenaries, spending the days slacking at his old haunts and despite being an expert at all he did, choosing none as his calling.
Other Members[edit]
- Boyd- He is a member throughout Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn and seems to remain a member after Radiant Dawn, although it is only said that he trains vigorously to keep up his physique.
- Mia- She joins in "Chapter 7: Shades of Evil". After Radiant Dawn she is said to leave the mercenaries and travel alone while occasionally coming to Greil's Retreat to rest.
- Mist- She originally works behind the scenes due to being a child, but she becomes an active fighter starting in "Chapter 9: Gallia". It is not clearly started whether or not she was still part of the mercenaries after Radiant Dawn.
- Oscar- Oscar is part of the mercenaries throughout Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. Afterwards he leaves the mercenaries to rejoin Crimea's knights but is known to take mercenary work on the side.
- Rolf- He originally works behind the scenes due to being a child, but he becomes an active fighter starting in "Chapter 9: Gallia". He is one of the few confirmed to remain in the mercenaries after Radiant Dawn and is said to eventually become a tutor of archery.
- Rhys- He is a member throughout Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, having joined the mercenaries about a year prior to Path of Radiance. Afterwards he is implied to have left the mercenaries, but he opens up a chapel in Greil's Retreat and teaches school there.
