Mario & Sonic a the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is a crossover sports game that was released for arcades, the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS in 2016 and acts as an official tie-in for the 2016 Olympic Summer Games held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is the fifth installment of the Mario & Sonic and the last one for both the Wii U and the 3DS.
Gameplay[edit]
This game follows the basic gameplay of the Mario & Sonic series. There are a number of Olympic events for the characters to take part in, and the Wii U and 3DS versions add some new characters alongside the returning cast, although they are only playable for certain missions. Both of the games also include amiibo functionality, with scanned amiibo from either series granting coins/rings or unlocking other bonuses.
As with previous installments of the game, there are several differences between the modes in the Wii U and 3DS versions. There are some differences in the new characters offered for each version, and the 3DS version exclusively has a story mode called Road to Rio, in which the player's Mii character can choose to train at either Mario or Sonic's gym for the Olympics.
Playable Characters[edit]
The different versions of the game feature different approaches to their respective playable rosters.
In the Wii U game, all of the returning characters are playable in all events, and new characters are designated as guest characters who are only playable in certain events. In the 3DS version, only Mario is playable in all events, and all other characters are only playable in certain events. There are also some new characters exclusive to either the Wii U or 3DS version. Both of these versions, like the previous installment, include [[Mii]s as playable characters.
The arcade version only features the returning characters from the previous games and does not include any of the new characters from the Wii U or 3DS versions. In the Japanese version of the arcade game, several of the characters had to be unlocked.
