Mario Tennis Open is a Mario-themed tennis game that was releases for the Nintendo 3DS in 2012. It is the fifth game of the Mario Tennis subseries and was released seven years after the previous game. Like Mario Golf: World Tour, this game leaves behind the RPG elements and focus on original characters that were featured in the previous handheld games.

This game follows the standard gameplay of the Mario Tennis games, but adapts it to the controls of the 3DS. The touch screen can be used to select specific shots to perform during matches, and the gyroscope can be used to switch the camera angle to behind a character by tilting the 3DS vertically. This game also replaces the Power Shot concept with Chance Shots. After an opponent performs a bad rebound, a player will be able to perform a Chance Shot by stepping into a colored spot that appears (representing a different Mario item or enemy) and using the type of shot represented by the same color. These Chance Shots have different effects on the opponent, but they have the option to counter by using a shot represented by the opposing color.

The game is divided into a Tournament mode, Exhibition mode and a set of Special Games. The four types of Special Games available are Ring Shot, Super Mario Tennis (where the ball is used to interact with a Super Mario Bros. level playing on a wall), Galaxy Rally and Inky Showdown. This game also contains a variety of gear and costumes for [[Mii] characters that can be used to boost their stats.

Mario Tennis Open supports up to four players for multiplayer games and is the first Mario Tennis game capable of online gameplay. It is also capable of StreetPass, through which players can have matches with opponents that imitate other players.

There are also characters that can be unlocked through scanning QR Codes: Metal Mario and seven different color variations of Yoshis (Red, Blue, Light Blue, Yellow, Pink, Black and White).
