Shaymin is a hedgehog-like legendary Pokémon that was introduced in the fourth generation games. It is obtained primarily through Nintendo events or using items obtained at said events, although it has also become obtainable through spin-off games.

Information

Shaymin's Sky Forme.

Shaymin is a small and peaceful Pokémon that is commonly associated with nature. It lives in flower patches and avoids detection by curling to resemble a flowering plant. Shaymin also has the ability to dissolve toxins in the air, which can instantly change ruined land into fertile fields of flowers (which is implied to be the origin of Floaroma Town). The flowers on its bodies will burst into bloom if it is lovingly hugged and senses gratitude.

Additionally, Shaymin possesses two alternate forms. Its Land Forme is its original from from Diamond and Pearl. This form is a grass type that resembles a white hedgehog. Platinum introduces the Sky Forme, which has a sleeker and more canine-like appearance, as well as also being a Flying-type. Shaymin will assume its Sky Forme when exposed to a Gracidea Flower between the hours of 4 AM and 8 PM, but it reverts into Land Forme when night falls (as well as when it is either frozen or deposited in a PC Box).

In Pokémon: Diamond, Pearl and Platinum Versions, Shaymin appears in the Flower Paradise, which can only be reached with the event item Oak's Letter.

Other Games

In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, Shaymin appears in Pueltown during a special mission where it acts as a bouquet for a wedding and must be calmed through battle after being attacked by Team Dim Sun. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, Shaymin appeared at the top of Sky Peak and would ask to join the party the second time they climbed the dungeon. Shaymin also appeared in Pokémon Rumble, where it was unlocked with a ticket earned by releasing Arbok, Charizard, Kangaskhan, Bastiodon and Arcanine. In PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure, Shaymin appeared at Flower Zone but could not be befriended. In 'Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it was featured in a bonus mission where it appeared at Latolato Trail. It had to first be battled in Normal Forme, and then it had to be chased and battled while it was in Sky Forme. After being captured, Shaymin could be transferred to the fourth generation games.

• In the Super Smash Bros. series, Shaymin made a cameo appearance in the background of the Unova Pokémon League stage that was seen in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It would be seen in its Land Forme, then it would change into its Sky Forme and fly away. Shaymin has also been represented by a trophy in the 3DS game and two stages of a Primary Spirit in Ultimate. Its initial Spirit was an Ace-rank Spirit of its Land Forme. When brought up to Level 99, the Spirit could be enhanced into a Legend-rank Spirit of its Sky Forme, which also enhanced jumping ability. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Shaymin's Spirit would possess Ivysaur in a battle where the player took gradual damage from the flowery effect.

In Other Media

• Shaymin is featured in the eleventh movie, where it is pulled into the Distortion World on accident, which leads Ash and his friends to protect it from Zero, who seeks to use it to create a portal to the Distortion World. During the movie it switches forms several times, with the Land Forme being more timid while the Sky Forme is braver and more daring. At the end of the movie it is safely returned to a group of Shaymin. One episode of the Sinnoh series also featured Marley bringing an injured Shaymin to safety with the help of Ash's group. They were hounded by Team Rocket the whole time, but in the end Team Rocket was beaten when other Shaymin came with Gracidea flowers so that they could beat them in Sky Forme.

Trivia

• Its name origin is uncertain, although "sha" is Japanese for gratitude. It may also be a play on the Hebrew word Shamayim, which means sky and is part of the word used for heaven in Jewish mysticism.
