U-Mos is a Luminoth who appears in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. He is notable as being the first major NPC in the Prime series (preceded only by Adam Malkovich for the entire Metroid series).

Background

The Last Sentinel of the Luminoth, a title he inherited from his parent, V-Mos who was the third sentinel before him. A relatively young Luminoth of 215 cycles of age (the eldest of the race living to 1000, making U-Mos the equivalent of being a young adult). Fifty years before the events of Prime 2, the planet Aether was hit by a Phazon filled comet that, due to the planet's unique energy converter, split the planet into two dimensions, the normal Aether and another Dark Ather where the Ing were spawned.

After a long and bitter war was fought and the Luminoth were on the edge of defeat, so U-Mos ordered the surviving Luminoth into cryogenic stasis at the Great Temple. With their defeat imminent, U-Mos could do nothing but pray for salvation for his race, even amidst the struggle of the recently arrived Space Pirates and Galactic Federation Marines. However the arrival of Samus Aran signaled hope for the Luminoth on the planet.

Upon meeting with Samus, he recognized her potential to help save his race and told her the story of the Ing. He provided her with a plan to restore the Energy Controller as well as the ability to translate certain Luminoth holograms that would allow her to read certain Lore entries and access different areas. He himself did not join her in her mission (presumably due to his own duties) but instead provided her with mission objectives as she worked to restore the Light of Aether.

After she had restored the energy in the three main controllers, U-Mos provided her with her last mission: to claim the last bit of energy in the Dark version of the Great Temple - the Sky Temple which was guarded by Emperor Ing. The only way to access it was the 10 Sky Temple Keys which had been previously sought out by ten Luminoth Keybearers - all of whom had died in their pursuit, save for only one. To aid in her pursuit, U-Mos upgraded her Power Suit to the Light Suit, creating a fusion of Luminoth and Chozo technology that allowed her to remain unaffected by Dark Aether.

After Dark Aether had vanished, U-Mos revived the remaining Luminoth and they greeted Samus and showed their appreciation for her help. However Samus merely continued on with a brief wave as she continued on to her next mission while U-Mos and the Luminoth set to work to restore their war torn world.

Trivia

• Like the other Luminoth, U-Mos possesses great powers of telekinesis, flight, the ability to project holograms and personal energy shields (seen when the player tries to shoot him) and his combat skills are said to be on par with the Chozo.
