Debut | Paper Mario |
Sushie is a meddlesome nanny who left her home and family to take on a special group of charges, the Fearsome Five of Lavalava Island. She didn't seem to recognize Mario when they first met, but gladly accepted his help in finding the Fearsome Five after they had wandered into Jade Jungle. After they had saved the Yoshi Kids and Mario was given a way to find Raphael the Raven and Mt. Lavalava, Sushie intervened to try and stop Mario, but decided to accompany him instead after hearing his story of saving the princess. Her swimming abilities were helpful in finding Raphael, and her internal reserves of water were just as effective in taking out the fiery monsters of Mt. Lavalava.
Background
Sushie reads romance novels as a hobby and considers herself a romantic, though her meddling nature prevents her from being so. She is fiercely protective of everyone she meets, risking her own life in favor of theirs.
When the princess had been saved, Sushie returned to Lavalava Island and her babysitting duties, but also followed the Yoshi Leader to Toad Town for the celebration at Peach's Castle.
Gameplay
Outside of battle, Sushie can be used at certain docks throughout the game to carry Mario across bodies of water. While swimming, Sushie can also dive under the water to grab treasures or duck under bridges. Unfortunately, she has no other uses outside of battle.
In battle, Sushie has the following attacks:
- Belly Flop - Sushie leaps onto an enemy stomach first. Hits like a Jump, timed like a Hammer.
- Squirt - For 3 FP, Sushie will fill herself with water and spray it on an enemy. Particularly good against fiery enemies.
- Water Block - For 3 FP, Sushie traps Mario inside of a watery shield that raises his defense by 1 for a few turns.
- Tidal Wave - For 6 FP, Sushie will swim across the screen and hit every enemy with waves of water. Easily the most complicated Action Command in the game...
Trivia
- Sushie has a daughter named Sashimie, who apparently had a baby of her own near the end of Paper Mario (Chef Shimi, anyone?).
- Sushie can get an extra letter at the Toad Town post office from Raphael, but you have to go to Peach's Castle and come back.
- Sushie is obviously based off the Japanese word "sushi" which often times includes raw fish. The word for raw fish in Japanese is "sashimi".
