Golbat large-jawed bat-like Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation Pokémon games. It was initially Zubat's only evolved form, but it was later shown to evolve into Crobat in the second generation, which retroactively makes Golbat into the middle stage of Zubat's three-stage evolutionary line.

Information

Golbat evolves from Zubat at Level 22 and is a much larger Pokémon, particularly its mouth. It loves to drink the blood of living things and is active primarily on dark and moonless nights, when it flies through the skies in search of fresh blood from both people and Pokémon. They attack in a stealthy manner by puncturing their victim's skin with their four fangs, no matter how hard their hide may be. They instantly draw and gulp down more than ten ounces of blood, which may even make it too heavy to fly. It usually does not stop until it is full.

Likely due to their dangerous nature, Golbat are commonly used by members of criminal organizations such as Team Rocket, Team Magma, Team Aqua and Team Galactic. Golbat eventually evolves into Crobat, when it is leveled up with a high amount of happiness.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen, Golbat appear at Seafoam Islands, Victory Road and Cerulean Cave. In FireRed/LeafGreen, they could also be found at Icefall Cave and Lost Cave. In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, they can be found in any cave, as well as being found in Routes 28 and 42 at night in Crystal. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, Golbat also appeared in the Mountain and Savannah areas of the Safari Zone at night. They could also be caught through the Pokéwalkers Quiet Cave and Scary Cave courses, from which they could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.

In Pokémon: Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, Golbat could be found at the Cave of Origin, Meteor Falls, Seafloor Cavern, Shoal Cave, Spear Pillar and Victory Road. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum they appeared at Route 227 at night as well as in Oreburgh Gate, Ravaged Path, Mt. Coronet, Lost Tower, Iron island, Victory Road, Snowpoint Temple, Sendoff Spring, Turnback Cave and Stark Mountain. In Black and White, it was found somewhat uncommonly at Route 13, outside the Giant Chasm's entrance and within the Giant Chasm's caves.

Other Games

In Pokémon Pinball as well as Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, it only could be gained through evolution. They are also present in Pokémon Puzzle League as part of both Koga and Team Rocket's Pokémon rosters. Golbat was also featured in the "Gutsy Golbat" minigame in Pokémon Stadium 2, in which players controlled Golbat (or Crobat) that fly through a cave and collect hearts while avoiding Magnemite. They also appear in Pokémon Stadium, Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.

In Pokémon Channel, Golbat appeared within the Ruins of Truth at all times of day. In Pokémon Trozei!, they could be found at Secret Storage 5 and Mr. Who's Den. Golbat also appeared in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams where it could be found at the eleventh through fourteenth floors of Lapis Cave, the first four floors of Buried Relic, the forty-sixth through fiftieth floors of Wish Cave and the sixth through tenth floors of Murky Cave. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Golbat could be found in Aegis Cave and the first nine basement floors of Labyrinth Cave.

Golbat could be caught in the Panula Cave area of Pokémon Ranger as well as Crysta Cave in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia and the Old Mansion and Fire Temple in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs. In Pokémon Rumble, Golbat appeared at Rocky Cave. In PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure, it was found at the Cavern Zone. Golbat also appeared in Pokémon Rumble Blast at Everspring Valley's cave.

• In the Pokémon anime, during the Kanto series Koga used a Golbat during his battle with Ash that Ash defeated with his Charmander. Brock also had a Zubat which evolved into a Golbat early into the Johto series. It was a Golbat for about thirty more episodes when it evolves into a Crobat to stop a rocket fired by Team Rocket. A Golbat had also been one of Ash's opponents at the Indigo League, and during the Battle Frontier series it was shown as one of Agatha's Pokémon. Aside from these appearances, Golbat have made mostly minor appearances usually in the possession of the various criminal organizations.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Golbat was first featured as part of Koga's team during the Red/Green/Blue arc. He was ble to use its Supersonic to form a special mirror through which Koga could observe action from a distance. Blue took the Golbat after defeating Koga at Silph Co. in order to locate Professor Oak and returned it when they teamed up at Cerise Island at the climax of the Yellow arc. During that same arc, Agatha was shown to have her own Golbat which battled with Koga's. Koga's Golbat won and was effective against Agatha's other Pokémon.

Trivia

• Golbat's name could be a shortening of "golden-capped fruit bat", which is the largest known bat, or it could just be a simple combination of "ghoul" and "bat".
• Despite its obvious flight capabilities, Golbat was only able to learn Fly starting in the fourth generation.
