The Shadow Queen was an ancient demon who appeared as the final boss of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. She appears to be of the same species as Beldam and the other Shadow Sirens

Background

Ancient Times

The Shadow Queen apparently hailed from "the dark beyond" and destroyed an ancient and peaceful civilization (where Rogueport was later located), causing part of it to sink underwater. She made a quarter of the city's remains into her new home, the Palace of Shadow. She kept treasures stolen from all over the world there. The Shadow Queen also created the seven Crystal Stars, which held "the essence of the heavens" to increase her power. A Crystal Star was displayed in each country in order to show the Shadow Queen's influence.

As her terror continued, she unleashed three dragon siblings upon the world and built the Pit of 100 Trials as a torturing area for her prisoners. However, a band of four heroes rose to stop her. They were no match for the Shadow Queen at first, but then they used her Crystal Stars against her. This heavily wounded the Shadow Queen, and the four heroes then used the Crystal Stars to seal her soul away in the deepest part of the Palace of Shadows. The door to the Palace was also sealed shut with a magic that could only be undone with the power of the Crystal Stars, or otherwise it would expire in a thousand years. Thus it came to be known as the Thousand-Year Door.

But the Shadow Queen also placed a curse on the four heroes as revenge, so that after they hid the Crystal Stars away their souls would be trapped within black treasure chests, where they eventually went insane. Over the next thousand years, Beldam, one of the Shadow Queen's most loyal servants, got to work on finding a way to free the Shadow Queen.

One Thousand Years Later

In The Thousand-Year Door, Beldam tricked the X-Nauts into seeking the seven Crystal Stars by saying that the Shadow Queen would grant the wishes of their leader, Grodus. The seal on the Thousand-Year Door was weakening, as it was exactly the thousandth year since the Shadow Queen had been imprisoned.

Grodus and the Shadow Sirens were successful in tricking Mario into opening the Thousand-Year Door after he had gathered all of the Crystal Stars. Grodus revived the Shadow Queen and offered her a new host body, that of Princess Peach. But when Grodus tried to order the Shadow Queen around, she was angered and destroyed Grodus's body with her magic.

After being reunited with Beldam, the Shadow Queen noticed Mario and his partners, and offered them places as her servants. When they refused, she engaged them in battle. Mario eventually forced the Shadow Queen into her true form, but was forced to stand down from the battle. However, Mario and his partners were granted more power by the Crystal Stars and the people they had helped during their adventure. Peach also briefly regained control of her body and lent Mario the last of her power.

The Shadow Queen battled Mario again, but this time she did not win. The Shadow Queen's spirit was destroyed, and Peach was restored to normal.

• In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Shadow Queen appeared as an Ace-rank Primary Spirit, represented by the art of her possessing Peach.

Trivia

• She has 150 HP.
• The Shadow Queen seems to be a great source of evil in the world, as her defeat causes the Shadow Sirens and X-Nauts to reform.
