− | + | The Virtual Console was a special categorization of classic games available for purchase and download through the Nintendo Wii's online Wii Shop Channel. The Virtual Console's offerings included games from the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super NES, and Nintendo 64 as well as third party consoles including the SEGA Genesis, SEGA Master System, NEC's Turbografx-16, NeoGeo, and Commodore64. | |
− | New games | + | New games were added every Mondays for North America, Tuesdays for Japan and South Korea, and Fridays for Europe and Australia. Games stopped being released in 2013, and the service was shut down completely with the end of the Wii's online service in January 2019. It has been succeeded by Virtual Console series for the 3DS and Wii U, which have covered other systems such as the Game Boy, Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS. It is also possible to transfer any Virtual Console games on a Wii to a Wii U. |

Latest revision as of 09:16, 11 December 2023
The Virtual Console was a special categorization of classic games available for purchase and download through the Nintendo Wii's online Wii Shop Channel. The Virtual Console's offerings included games from the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super NES, and Nintendo 64 as well as third party consoles including the SEGA Genesis, SEGA Master System, NEC's Turbografx-16, NeoGeo, and Commodore64.
New games were added every Mondays for North America, Tuesdays for Japan and South Korea, and Fridays for Europe and Australia.
The number in () denotes the number of games available in Australia when a difference is present.

First Party games on the Virtual Console
Controller[edit]
The Wii Remote currently works with all NES, Master System, Genesis, TurboGrafx-16, and Commodore64 games, but is incompatible with Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 games. The classic controller and Gamecube controller are currently compatible with every game.
Games[edit]
Games denoted with an * are not available in Australia. Games denoted with an ** are not available in Europe.
NES[edit]
All NES games cost 500 points in North America, Japan, Europe, and Australia and 400 points in South Korea unless otherwise noted.
- Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels was removed from the European and Australian catalog two weeks after being uploaded as a limited release, but was returned in August 2008.

Sega Master System[edit]
All Master System games cost 500 points in all regions unless otherwise noted.
- R-Type was originally added for different regions throughout 2009. It was removed on September 30, 2011.
Sega Genesis[edit]
All Genesis games cost 800 points in North America, Europe and Australia and 600 points in Japan unless otherwise noted.
TurboGrafx16[edit]
All Turbografx16 games are 600 points in all regions and all TurbografxCD games are 800 points in all regions unless otherwise noted.
TurboGrafx16 games were initially unavailable in Australia due to the Turbografx16 having not been originally released there (they could be downloaded by switching a Wii's country settings to Europe at the cost of all current Wii Points being erased), but the Turbografx games were eventually released for the Australian Virtual Console starting in July 2007.
NeoGeo[edit]
All NeoGeo games were 900 points in all regions, unless marked otherwise.
Commodore 64[edit]
All Commodore 64 games were 500 points in North America and Europe. As was once the case with Turbografx-16, Commodore 64 games were available in Europe, but not Australia. Every Commodore 64 game was removed from the service in August 2013.
- Last Ninja 3 was released on the European catalog in December 2008 and then removed in March 2010 because of emulation problems that prevented the game from working after the first level.
Virtual Console Arcade[edit]
Prices range.
MSX[edit]
MSX games were only made available in Japan. All games were 800 points, unless otherwise noted.
