Agatha is a Ghost-type Pokémon trainer who served as a member of the Kanto Elite Four within the first generation Pokémon games. She was known for her short temper.

Background

In her youth, Agatha was a rival of Professor Oak. Agatha continued battling with Pokémon well into her old age. However, she was disappointed to find Oak had given up on training and retired to focus on his research. She ended up becoming a member of the Elite Four that was shared between Kanto and Johto, and her Ghost-type Pokémon were known for being "horrifically terrifying in toughness".

In Pokémon: Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen Versions, Agatha was the third member of the Elite Four was defeated by Blue and then Red shorty after. Agatha recognized Red as a pupil of Oak, causing her to talk about her past with him and to tell Red that she'd show him how a true trainer fights. After being beaten, she saw what Oak must have seen in Red and urged him to continue onwards. Afterwards, through a Fame Checker message, she asked Red to continue battling when he became old like her, instead of "going soft" like Oak. She was alternately defeated by Trace and then Chase/Elaine in the Let's Go! remakes, in which she could be challenged to rematches.

Agatha was not shown as a member of the Elite Four in the second generation games. Her fate is unconfirmed, although considering her age, she most likely either retired or passed away during the three-year gap between the games.

Pokémon Roster

Agatha specializes in Ghost-types, but she also uses Poison-types , most likely due to the low amount of Ghost-type Pokémon in the games. Her Pokémon roster in the games is:

• Arbok

In FireRed and LeafGreen, Agatha replaces Golbat and Haunter with Crobat and Misdreavus in subsequent rematches. In Let's Go!, her Haunter was replaced by a Weezing, and she also added an Alolan Marowak for rematches.

In Other Pokémon Games

Agatha appeared in Pokémon Stadium as an opponent in the Gym Leader Castle, alongside the other Elite Four members. Agatha used Haunter, Golbat, Arbok, Muk, Venusaur and Gengar in Round 1. In Round 2, she used Jynx, Alakazam, Arbok, Gyarados, Venusaur and Gengar.

In Pokémon Masters EX, Agatha and her Gengar appeared as a playable sync pair that could be recruited at random through the Sync Pair Scout feature, with her Gengar being able to to Mega Evolve into Mega Gengar when using a sync move. A variant of Agatha paried with Arbok could also be recruited through the Sync Pair Scout during limited time periods starting in May 2023. When fought as an opponent, she has also used Golbat in battle. Within the Main Story, she was also featured as an opponent in Chapter 17, where she had formed a team with Ghost-Type Elite Four trainers from other regions: Phoebe and Acerola. The three of them acted as the player's opponents for the chapter. After being defeated, Agatha decided to observe and learn about team battles from the sidelines, and then start over from scratch. She volunteered Acerola and Phoebe to join the player's team in order to gain more experience. Acerola went along with the arrangement, but Phoebe declined it in favor of accompanying Agatha. Agatha also appeared in Professor Oak's sync pair story, where she confronted the professor and briefly engaged him in battle. She also appeared as an opponent in Phoebe's Sync Pair Story, where Phoebe had to defeat her for her Dusclops to evolve. She also made appearances in other events, such as the "Fight or Fright" Story Event, in which she and other Ghost-type trainers took part in a spooky tradition called the Midnight Parade, and the "Solve the Case" Costume Event in which she took on the role of a mansion owner while playing a mystery game. Agatha was also featured in Part 2 of "Trainer Files: Kanto Elite Four", in which she defeated Ariana in a battle and proceeded to criticize her about her motives in serving Giovanni and what was keeping her from becoming stronger. Afterwards, she and Lance battled Lorelei and Bruno to train until they received an alert about Team Rocket activity, and the whole Elite Four turned up to beat the Rocket executives while Scottie/Bettie kept their grunts busy. Agatha also appeared as an opponent in the Kanto Challenge of the Champion Stadium mode, which used the Elite Four line-up from the first generation games.

• In the Pokémon anime, Agatha was the last of the original Elite Four members to make an appearance and did not appear until an episode of the Battle Frontier series (based on Pokémon: Emerald Version). In that episode, she acted as Viridian City Gym's temporary gym leader. Ash and Agatha battled each other just for fun, as Ash had earned the gym's badge long ago, and he lost to her. It was only after the battle that she revealed her status as an Elite Four memeber, and she gave her recommendation for Ash to take on the Battle Frontier.
  • In the movie I Choose You! (which is set in an alternate continuity), Agatha makes a cameo appearance as Ash's teacher in a nightmare that Ash has about a world without Pokémon.
• Agatha appeared in the Pokémon Adventures manga as a villain, as the Elite Four were the antagonists of the Yellow arc. Agatha was perhaps the most villainous of the group, manipulating Lorelei into joining as well as using mind control to keep Bruno in their ranks. She battles Blue and Koga on Cerise Island and recalls her grudge with Professor Oak, which started when he left her research team because of its research going into controlling Pokémon's free wills. She is ultimately defeated and disappears afterwards. During the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc she appears in a flashback depicting her, Oak, Kurt, Pryce and the Pokémon Daycare couple's friendship when they were younger.
• Agatha makes a brief appearance in an episode of the Pokémon Origins anime, depicting her fighting and being defeated by Red during his challenge of the Elite Four.
• She appeared in an episode of Pokémon Generations that was based on Blue's challenge of the Elite Four. During the battle, she mentions Professor Oak and the Pokédex, surprised that Oak's grandson is focused on battling rather than researching. As in the game, Blue defeats her and advances onward.

Canceled Appearances

• Sprites of Agatha were found within a ROM of a demo for Pokémon: Gold and Silver Versions. In this demo, Agatha was found within a house inside of a cave near the Blue Forest, near a Ghost-type gym.

Trivia

• She may be named after British crime author Agatha Christie. Her name also has its similarities to words like 'aghast' and 'hag'. Her Japanese name is Kikuko, which is based on a Japanese word for "chrysanthemum" and may also be referencing a Japanese word for "ghost".
• In FireRed and LeafGreen, it was said that she held the record of being the oldest member of the Elite Four. It is unknown if this record is still standing in later games and if it counts the Elite Four line-ups of other regions.
• She was excluded from Pokémon Puzzle League (in which two of her fellow Elite Four members appeared), likely because she had not yet appeared in the anime at the time that the game was made.
• She is alluded to in Black and White 2, when Shauntal is reciting a quote from one of her unfinished novels, which remarks on the unexplained nature of her similarity to Bertha from Sinnoh's Elite Four in terms of both name and appearance.
• In Red/Green/Blue/Yellow, her room at the Pokémon League is a large room that is filled with gravestones on the sides of it. In FireRed/LeafGreen, it is changed into a more ordinary-looking room with a fighting ring and several statues on the sides of the room.
• In Pokémon Masters EX, it is implied that the battle scene from the opening of the first generation games (between a Nidorino and a Gengar) was actually a battle between Oak and Agatha, as the two prepare to battle with those same Pokémon during Professor Oak's sync pair story.
