Ramos is a Gym Leader of the Kalos region who appears as an opponent in Pokémon X and Y. He is the fourth Gym Leader who has to be battled in the game and specializes in Grass-type Pokémon.

Background[edit]

Ramos was an elderly Pokémon trainer who was also a dedicated gardener. As Gym Leader of Coumarine City's gym, he designed his gym to reflect that. It consisted a giant tree surrounded by an obstacle course involving vines, which he referred to as his garden playground. He had a tendency to refer to younger people as whippersnappers and to use metaphors relating to plants and gardening. Generally, he was warm and friendly to others.

In X/Y, he was challenged and defeated by Calem/Serena. He acknowledged their victory by giving them the Plant Badge and TM 86: Grass Knot. Ramos could also appear at the Battle Chateau for rematches after the player had obtained the rank of Marquis/Marchioness, as he himself held the title of Marquis.

Pokémon Roster[edit]

His Pokémon team for his gym battled consists of Jumpluff, Weepinbell and Gogoat. At the Battle Chateau, he uses just Jumpluff and Gogoat prior to the player being the Elite Four, and afterwards the Jumpluff is replaced by Victreebel.

In Other Pokémon Games[edit]

In Pokémon Masters EX, Ramos and his Weepinbell appeared as a playable sync pair that could be recruited at random through the game's Sync Pair Scout feature. His Weepinbell could evolve into a Victreebel by completing a Sync Pair Story in which he had to defeat Gardenia in a battle. He has made minor appearances in some of the game's Story Events. In the prestige event "Battle Buffet Bash", he defeated Brock to win some jelly doughnuts. During the Legendary Adventure "Give and Take", Professor Sycamore passed along information from Ramos about the forest looking healthier recently, and it was mentioned that Ramos was keeping an eye on the woods every day. In an extra scene for the "Champion Time" Story Event, Ramos and Pryce put up a good fight against Leon, and Ramos was intrigued to hear about Mustard. Ramos also provided some rare Berries as an ingredient for Mallow's trial in the "Trials on the Isle" Story Event.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • Ramos has made several appearances in the Pokémon anime. In his first appearance, he was shown to own a ranch for Grass-type Pokémon, and Ash's group ended up helping him to save it from Team Rocket. In the following episode, Ash challenged his gym and defeated him. He then made several more minor appearances throughout the rest of the X/Y-based series, including helping the effort to destroy the Giant Rock in the series' climactic arc.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, he appeared during the X/Y arc, where he worked with the other Gym Leaders of Kalos to oppose Team Flare.

Trivia[edit]

  • His name could refer to "ramus" (which is Latin for branch), the plant named Adonis ramosa and possibly "moss". His Japanese name, Fukiji, refers to the Japanese name for the pheasant's-eye and a term meaning "long life and happiness".
  • According to the Gym Freaks program, he's had his large shears for the past thirty years. The program also claims that he's been into tea lately and tries to get great tea leaves from their country of origin.
  • When he's talked to after beating the Elite Four, he will muse about how long AZ had searched for his Pokémon (3,000 years) and claim that he would not have been able to stood it.
