Mankey is Fighting-type Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games and has physical attributes of both a monkey and a pig.

Information

Mankey is an agile Pokémon that lives primarily in trees. They are known for their short tempers and will quickly anger even appearing to be docile. One becoming enraged is usually enough to send the rest of its treetop colony into an anger. Mankey usually cannot distinguish friends from foes, and groups of them have been known to attack any nearby target for no reason. When separated from its group, a Mankey can become becomes infuriated by loneliness.

Signs of an oncoming rampage from a Mankey include its body shaking and its nasal breathing becoming rough. However, at that point it is usually too late to try to avoid its rampage. At Level 28, Mankey evolves into Primeape.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Red Version, Mankey appears commonly at Routes 5, 6, 7 and 8. In Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen, Mankey instead appeared at Routes 3, 4, 22 and 23, as well as within the Rock Tunnel in FireRed/LeafGreen.

In Gold and HeartGold, Mankey could only be caught at Routes 9 and 42. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Mankey appeared at Routes 225 and 226 when the Poké Radar was used.

Other Games

In Pokémon Pinball, Mankey could be found at Cerulean City, Vermilion City Seaside, Lavender Town, Celadon City and Saffron City. They could be photographed at the Valley area in Pokémon Snap. In Pokémon Trozei!, Mankey could be found at Secret Storage 16 and Mr. Who's Den. They also appeared in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, where a group of Mankeys acted as bosses of Uproar Forest who help the player to redecorated their base after being defeated, and other Mankey could be recruited at Uproar Forest's eighth and ninth floors. They were found on the first nine floors of Mt. Travail in Explorers of Time and Darkness.

They appeared in Pokémon Ranger at Olive Jungle. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, Mankey were found at Peril Cliffs. Mankey could also be found in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs at Daybreak Ruins, Dangerous Cliff, Ice Temple and Odd Temple. They appeared at Fiery Furnace in Pokémon Rumble. In PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure, Mankey appeared at Meadow Zone.

• One episode of the first season of the Pokémon anime featured a Mankey that stole Ash's hat, and Ash's attempts to get it back. Partway through the episode, it evolved into a Primeape. One Johto episode also showed a Mankey as part of a gang with a Primeape and Tyrogue. Aside from that, Mankey has made primarily minor appearances.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, a gang of Mankey led by a Primeape attacked Blue and Yellow during the Yellow arc. Blue's Porygon was able to defeat it, and Yellow was able to convince them to leave.
• One chapter of the Electric Tale of Pikachu manga showed Ash catching a Mankey, although he traded it soon afterwards for a map of Mt. Moon.

• Mankey's name is a play on "monkey", possibly combined with either "man" or "mad".
