Azumarill is an aquatic rabbit-like Pokémon that was introduced in the second generation games. It is the evolved form of Marill, and starting in the third generation Azumarill also counts as the third and final form of Azurill's evolutionary line.

Information

Azumarill evolves from Marill at Level 18. They develop long ears which function as indispensable sensors. Azumarill can focus its hearing while standing still to identify which kinds of prey are around, even in rough and fast-running rivers. They also use their elongated ears to keep their insides from getting wet when they play in the water. Azumarill usually live in rivers and lakes and spends nearly all day underwater. This is because they can inhale and store a large volume of air.

Its body color as well as the bubble-like pattern on its stomach help Azumarill to camouflage itself when underwater. Azumarill also have the ability to create balloons out of air, and they use these air balloons to help drowning Pokémon by giving them something to breathe.

Appearances

Mainstream Games

Azumarill can only be obtained through evolving Marill in most cases. In Pokémon: Platinum Version, Azumarill could be found commonly at Victory Road.

Other Games

In Pokémon Channel, Azumarill appeared at Cobalt Coast on clear or rainy mornings and at Camp Starlight on Friday nights. It could only be obtained by evolving a Marill in Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire as well as in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was found at Secret Storage 12 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it could be recruited at the first twenty floors of Blizzard Island, the first ten basement floors of Crevice Cave, the first four basement floors of Lower Crevice Cave and the first nineteen basement floors of Mt. Avalanche. Azumarill also appeared in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs at Silver Falls.

Other Appearances

Other Media

  • In the Pokémon anime, Azumarill was first featured in an episode of the Johto series where it was a female working at the circus. Ash's Totodile developed a crush on her, although she had a Golduck boyfriend. Azumarill have later been shown in the ownership of trainers such as Jackson and Paul (with Paul giving his away after it lost), along with other primarily minor appearances throughout the series.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Azumarill was shown in one chapter of the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc, where Crystal failed to catch one that her mother was chasing, causing her to doubt her Pokémon catching abilities. In the Ruby/Sapphire arc, Matt of Team Aqua also used one to try and drown Sapphire and Flannery in a cable car at Mt. Chimney.

Trivia

  • Its name is an extension of Marill's (which seems to be a combination of "marine" and "rill") combined with a play on "azure" or "azul" (both of which are foreign words for blue).
