Debut | Pokémon: Ruby Version/Pokémon: Sapphire Version |
Brawly is the second gym leader faced in Pokémon: Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald Versions. He specializes in fighting-type Pokémon.
Background
Brawly was the gym leader of the Dewford Town Pokémon gym. His specialty was direct physical attacks. He has also subjected himself to training in the waves near Dewford and the dark Granite Cave, and it is also known that he once trained with Bruno of Kanto and Johto's Elite Four. His gym was constructed in the manner of a maze and was filled with darkness, mimicking the darkness of the Granite Cave, with only a small light surrounding a challenging trainer that grew with each enemy trainer that was defeated. he also often made metaphorical comparisons to waves.
In Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, he was challenged and defeated by Brendan/May. He told the challenger that he/she had made a much bigger splash than he had expected and awarded them with the Knuckle Badge as well as TM 08: Bulk Up, foreseeing a bright future for the young trainer. In Emerald, he could then be challenged to several rematches.
Pokémon Roster
In Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, Brawly has the following Pokémon in the first battle:
Brawly later has the following Pokémon in subsequent rematches:
- Machamp, Meditite, Hitmontop and Hariyama in the first rematch.
- Machamp, Medicham, Hitmontop and Hariyama in the second rematch.
- Hitmonchan, Machamp, Medicham, Hitmontop and Hariyama in the third rematch.
- Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, Machamp, Medicham, Hitmontop and Hariyama in the fourth rematch.
Other Appearances
- Brawl appeared in three episodes of the Pokémon anime that were ten episodes apart. In the first episode Ash had underestimated Brawly and thought him irresponsible to all the time he spent surfing until it turned out to actually be part of Brawly's training, and he defeated Ash. In Brawly's two-part reappearance, Ash successfully defeated Brawly's star pupil, which led Brawly to accept Ash's challenge to a rematch, and this time Ash won. In this version he was also connected to another fighting-type trainer, as he was said to have trained under Chuck.
