Dorcas is a playable unit in all three stories of Fire Emblem and is the first playable Fighter encountered. Despite being large and muscular, he is actually quite sensitive and caring for others- particularly his wife Natalie.

Background[edit]

Dorcas originally lived in Bern with his wife, Natalie. However, he was troubled by Natalie's childhood sickness which prevented her from travelling far. Dorcas decided to raise money to have Natalie's leg mended. However, this led him to join with the Ganelon Bandits. He felt ashamed of himself for stooping so low, but he continued to follow the bandits regardless. In "Chapter 4: In Occupation's Shadow", Dorcas joined a group of Ganelon Bandits in an attack on a fortress where Lyn and her mercenaries were holed up. However, Lyn was able to talk sense into Dorcas, and he learned that Natalie was in the fortress with Lyn. Dorcas then helped Lyn to drive off the bandits. After dropping Natalie off at the village, Dorcas joined up with Lyn's group in order to earn money, after getting an invitation from Lyn's tactician. Dorcas then returned to Bern and worked as a mercenary to fight off the nearby bandits.

One year later, Dorcas and Natalie had moved to the more peaceful Pherae. Dorcas continued his fund-raising mercenary work and worked with Bartre. The two were friends despite Bartre being more arrogant and competitive, as Barte still had a good heart. Dorcas and Bartre saw Eliwood, the marquess's son, in trouble with bandits at the beginning of "Taking Leave" (Eliwood Chapter 11) and so helped Eliwood's men to fight them off. Dorcas then worked for Eliwood and traveled with him, and he was also reunited with Lyn later. When the adventure was over, Dorcas returned to Pherae with enough money for Natalie's medication. One Support conversation shows that Dorcas got the money he needed from Farina. Natalie made a quick recovery.

Support Conversation Summaries[edit]

  • Bartre- In the first conversation, Bartre attempts to challenge Dorcas to another sparring match, but Dorcas is uninterested and is willing to let Bartre declare a victory on his behalf. In the second conversation, Bartre sees Dorcas drawing a picture of Natalie and sees how troubled he is over his wife's sickness. Bartre decides to ask Eliwood for a raise to help Dorcas in his cause and beat up Eliwood if he refused, although Dorcas did not approve of the plan. In the third conversation, Bartre returned from his meeting with Eliwood. He was unable to get the raise and said that Eliwood had remained calm while giving him some excuse containing many words Bartre didn't understand. Dorcas told Bartre that he was a fool, but a well-meaning fool, with his heart in the right place.
  • Farina- Dorcas and Farina meet and compare wages- with Farina being paid 20,000 gold while Dorcas is receiving only 2,000 gold in advance, and Farina flaunts her higher pay. Dorcas then asks Farina how he could make gold like her, and she agrees to help him only because he has a sick wife. But eventually, Farina decides to give Dorcas some of her own gold, which is enought to pay for Natalie's medication. Dorcas is extremely greatful, and Farina refuses his promises to pay her back one day until he promises to pay her back everything she gave him and more.
  • Geitz- Dorcas and Geitz meet, and Geitz asks Dorcas about his motivations. Geitz had noted Dorcas's fighting style, saying that he fought ruthlessly while only being concerned with saving himself. Dorcas says this is because he must return home to his family. Then in the second conversation, Dorcas notes Geitz's fighting style and says that he fights as if he doesn't care if he lives or dies. Geitz says that is because he still seeks the meaning of his own life. Dorcas said that he envied not having to worry about those abstract concerns, because he was already burdened with worrying for his own survival and his work. In the third Support conversation, Geitz says that he still hasn't found the meaning of his life but for the moment he feels good fighting. Dorcas and Geitz agree to fight together for the money.
  • Oswin- Oswin approaches Dorcas and thinks he would make a fine knight. He suggests that Dorcas join the Ostian knights, but Dorcas decides to mull it over. Dorcas ultimately declines, saying that his priority was to protect one (Natalie) and not many. Oswin respects his decision and they decide to head off, for the protected ones they held dear.
  • Vaida- Apparently Eliwood had arranged for Dorcas and Vaida to meet with each other, but in the first two conversations they miss each other completely. Each forms different ideas about the other. Vaida had heard about Dorcas leaving his wife at home to go on the journey and thought he was a scoundrel with a girl in every village. Dorcas hears that Vaida is pure but too idealistic and thinks that Vaida is young (probably thinking of her as a rebellious teenager). In the third Support conversation, they finally meet each other, but neither of them recognize each other.

Trivia[edit]

  • Dorcas also is an artist, usually drawing pictures of his wife.
