Dunsparce is a yellow snake-like Pokémon that was introduced in the second generation games.

Information

Dunsparce have drills at the ends of their tails which they use to burrow into the ground backwards. They will escape by burrowing immediately when spotted. Dunsparce are known for forming their nests in complex shapes deep underground. It prefers deep caves where no light will reach it, and it usually remains motionless there. Oddly enough, it also has a pair of wings which it can use to float a little.

Mainstream Games

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, they rarely appeared at Violet City side of the Dark Cave, but they could appear more commonly during swarms. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, they could also be found commonly by smashing rocks in that area. In FireRed and LeafGreen, they were commonly found at Three Isle Port.

In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, it appeared at Route 208 during swarms. In Black and White, Dunsparce could be rarely found at Route 12.

Other Games

A Shadow Dunsparce could be snagged from Rider Sash at Miror B.'s Hideout in Pokémon Colosseum, and after being purified it could be transferred to any of the third generation color versions. In Pokémon Channel, they appeared at Mt. Snowfall on cloudy mornings and nights. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was found at Secret Storage 10, Endless Level 11, Pair Trozei and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could be recruited at the first three floors of Great Canyon as well as the forty-third through forty- floors of Wish Cave and Joyous Tower. In Explorers of Time and Darkness, Dunsparce was recruitable at the first five floors of Foggy Forest. It was also found in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs at Rasp Cavern and Ice Temple.

• In the Pokémon anime, one episode of the Johto series featured a boy who wanted badly to catch a Dunsparce, as they had appeared in a swarm while he was away, and everyone else in the town had caught one, which caused the boy named Bucky to feel increasingly left out. Ash's group helped him to find a Dunsparce, and after they were side-tracked by Team Rocket, Bucky was able to challenge and capture it. Aside from this episode, Dunsparce has been mostly regulated to occasional cameo appearances.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, one chapter of the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc had Crystal battling both a Dunsparce and Flaaffy at Bill's abandoned motorboat, and she wound up catching them both, after the Dunsparce tried using its tail to sink the boat. In the FireRed/LeafGreen arc, a girl from Kin (Three) Island named Lostelle was also shown to have a Dunsparce. It was later shown as the main Pokémon of Professor Rowan's assistant Roseanne during the Diamond/Pearl manga, and she used Dunsparce's digging abilities to make shelter for herself and Diamond from an attacking Yanmega.

Trivia

• Its name seems to be a combination of "dun" (meaning yellowish-gray, as in its color) and "sparse" (which reflects its rarity).
• Dunspace is based on the "tsuchinoko", a fat snake-like cryptid originating from Japanese legends.
