Kingler is a large crustacean-like Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. It is the evolved form of Krabby.

Information

Kingler evolves from Krabby at Level 28. During evolution, one of its claws grows massively and becomes hard as steel. The large pincer has a crushing force of 10,000 horsepower, but it is heavy enough that Kingler is barely able to life it it, and it is unwieldy. It will lose its balance and staggers if it lifts its pincer too quickly. Despite the claw's power, it mostly just gets in the way outside of battle. Kingler have been known to use the claw to communicate, but it tires quickly from this.

In Pokémon: Red and Blue Versions, Kingler was commonly found by fishing at Route 23 and Cerulean Cave, and in Blue they could rarely be found on foot in Seafoam Islands. In Yellow, Kingler could be fished at routes 10 and 25, and it could be found both on foot and by fishing at Seafoam Islands. In LeafGreen, Kingler was found by fishing at Routes 19, 20 and 21, One Island, Three Island, Five Island, Six Island and Seven Island.

In Gold, Silver and Crystal, Kingler could be uncommonly found by fishing at Routes 19, 20, 21, 34, 40 and 41, Cherrygrove City, Olivine City, Cianwood City, Whirl Islands, Cerulean City and Cinnabar Island. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, they were rarely found from fishing at Routes 19, 34, and 40, Cherrygrove City, Union Cave, Olivine City, Cianwood City, Whirl Island and Seafoam Islands, by smashing rocks at Routes 19 and both on foot and by smashing rocks at Route 47's Cliff Cave. Kingler also appeared in the Safari Zone, on foot in the Wasteland area (with enough Water objects) and both on foot and through fishing at the Rocky Beach area.

In Black and White, Kingler could be rarely found by fishing in rippling water at Routes 4 and 13 and Driftveil City.

Other Games

In Pokémon Pinball and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Kingler could only be obtained through evolution. In the Pokémon e-Reader line, Kingler was featured in the "Kingler's Day" minigame in which the player controlled a Kingler trying to catch Goldeen and Magikarp in a pond while avoiding Cloyster. In Pokémon Trozei!, it appeared at Secret Storage 7 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it was found at the first eight basement floors of Brine Cave. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Symbols, it appeared at Lapras Beach. Kingler also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Bright Beach.

• In the Pokémon anime, Kingler was first shown as one of Giovanni's Pokémon during his gym battle with Gary, and he also lent it to Jessie and James when they wound up battling Ash. Ash's own Krabby evolved into a Kingler after winning its first match against an Exeggutor at the Indigo League tournament. It went on to defeat a Golbat and Seadra by itself to win the match for Ash. It was used only once more in the Indigo League and then later during the Whirl Cup. Ash planned to use Kingler during Silver Conference, but it wound up being badly injured while saving a group of Voltorb. Kingler has mostly made cameo appearances at Professor Oak's lab since, and it was shown to make friends with Ash's Corphish.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Kingler have made primarily minor appearances in the possession of Team Rocket grunts as well as one of the Team Rocket commanders during the FireRed/LeafGreen arc, Carr.

Trivia

• Its name seems to be a combination of "king" and "fiddler", which are both different types of real-life crabs.
