Selena is a boss from Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones and is part of Grado's original Imperial Three.
Background[edit]
Selena was born in a small impoverished village of Grado. No one there could afford their taxes, including Selena's family. However, Emperor Vigarde kindly sent them supplies which saved their lives. This motivated Selena to travel to Grado and enroll in the military. She was intent on dedicating her life to the emperor who had saved her and rose through the ranks. Selena felt and shared Vigarde's dream, and she was even implied to have fallen in love with him. After Valter was ousted from the Imperial Three following the loss of his sanity, Vigarde appointed Selena one of the three generals in his place, with the other two being Glen and Duessel, whom she looked up to as a father. She was given the nickname of Fluorspar as well as the matching gemstone. Vigarde advised her that the role of a soldier was to act as a shield instead of as a blade, and that protecting their citizens was more important than threatening their neighbors. Selena took these words to heart in her actions as a general.
She was dedicated to following her orders and the will of Vigarde above all else, even after his behavior changed completely and he set off the War of the Stones. Selena led troops in the attacks of Renais, but she sympathized with the plights of the commoners. She first showed up at a mountain village within Renais in "Chapter 2: The Protected". She was concerned with the villagers' bandit problem because she did not believe that civilians should suffer due to their kings' problems. She gave a Red Gem to whoever visited her at the village and would have an extended conversation with Eirika, who posed as a mercenary named Erina. At the end of "Chapter 3: The Bandits of Borgo", she was summoned to Grado Castle with the rest of the Imperial Three. Glen questioned Vigarde's recent behavior, but Selena reminded him that his only concern should be following orders. In the following audience with Vigarde, he appointed Caellach, Valter and Riev as additional generals. Selena seemed to be immediately bothered by Caellach immediately complimenting her appearance, and the two of them were sent to attack Frelia.
Instead of conquering Frelia, the two of them directly attacked the Tower of Valni between the eighth and ninth chapters, and they destroyed the Sacred Stone held there, which is what Vigarde truly wanted. She criticized Caellach for killing soldiers unnecessarily, but he did not take her seriously, and they soon retreated to avoid all-out conflict with Frelia. In the ninth chapter, the generals all met with Vigarde again. He ordered Selena to remain at the capital and await further orders. She afterwards appeared solely in Ephraim's path. At the end of Ephraim's "Cahpter 9: Fort Rigwald", Selena was assigned to pursue Duessel and execute him for being a traitor. She was shocked by these orders and fumbled her words as she tried to question the change in Vigarde's character, but she stopped immediately when Vigarde simply ordered her to go. In "Chapter 10: Turning Traitor", she met with Duessel while they were preparing to engage in combat with Ephraim's forces. Duessel was ready to try to negotiate with Ephraim instead of actually fighting him, but Selena took this as a sign that he truly was a traitor and then turned on him. She sent out Cormag and other soldiers to kill Duessel as well as Ephraim's army. However, Valter soon arrived with orders to return to the capital, as he claimed that Vigarde no longer trusted her and that his bidding had changed. She was shocked by this and left to try to talk with Vigarde.
She met with him in "Chapter 11: Phantom Ship" and was reprimanded by him for failing to execute Duessel. Vigarde began to accuse her of being a traitor as well, but Lyon arrived and suggested that Selena retrieve a Dragonstone from Za'albul Marsh. Vigarde approved the orders, and Selena volunteered to renew her oath of service before departing. Selena arrived at the swamp and found the dragonstone in "Chapter 13: Fluorspar's Oath", and Myrrh almost immediately approached her asking for the dragonstone. Selena began to question her about her allegiance and her connection to the dragonstone. Myrrh eventually mentioned "the darkness" that was corrupting people in Grado, and Selena demanded a full explanation. As Myrrh explained the effects of the Dark Stone, Selena realized that Vigarde must have been irreversibly changed by its influence. Ephraim's army then approached, and Selena decided to release Myrrh to them. She refused to give up the dragonstone due to the promise she had made with Vigarde, and she told Myrrh to tell Ephraim that she would have to be defeated before she would give up the dragonstone. Selena refused to step down despite Ephraim and Duessel's attempts to reach out to her, acknowledging that her path was foolish but that it was the only path of a true knight. Selena was killed in the ensuing battle, and with her last words she mentioned how tired she was.
