Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash is a Mario-themed tennis game that was released for the Wii U in 2015. It is the sixth installment of the Mario Tennis series.

Gameplay[edit]

This game mostly follows the standard gameplay of the Mario Tennis games and uses the Chance Shots introduced in the previous game. Characters can now charge shots, and there is also now an Ultra Smash that can be performed by performing a Jump Flat on a Special Chance Shot area. The game has a Classic Tennis mode for standard tennis matches, while introducing modes such as Mega Tennis (where all characters are large from the effects of Mega Mushrooms) and the Knockback Challenge (which replaces the standard tournament mode). There is also a single minigame called the Mega Ball Rally, in which players rally with a large ball that gradually grows smaller.

Ultra Smash supports up to four players in multiplayer and online gameplay. Two players can go online together for Doubles matches. When playing online, similar to Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, players can choose between Play for Fun and Play a Serious Match in order to divide the casual gamers and the more hardcore games. This game also features amiibo support. Scanning an amiibo will produce a computer-controlled partner character that can be trained to become more advanced. Amiibo partners can play alongside the player character even in matches that are supposed to be 1 vs. 1.

Playable Characters[edit]

Unlockable[edit]

Legacy[edit]

This game was criticized by most reviews for lacking in content, especially compared to other Mario Tennis games.

Sequels[edit]

Tennis would later be one of the sports featured in 2017's Mario Sports Superstars, with the tennis portion of the game having been developed by Camelot and based on the Mario Tennis games.

The next full Mario Tennis game would be Mario Tennis Aces for the Nintendo Switch in 2018.
