Mario Tennis Superstars is a Mario-themed sports compilation game that was released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2017. It features five different sports that can be played: golf, tennis, baseball, soccer and horse racing. Camelot developed the golf and tennis portions of the game, respectively based on their Mario Golf and Mario Tennis series, while Bandai Namco developed the rest of the game.

Gameplay[edit]

This game allows players to choose between five different sports to play. All of the sports except for horse racing are ones that had been featured in past Mario sports games. Those sports feature gameplay that is similar to the original games, including elements such as Chance Shots from the Mario Tennis games. The main exception is that soccer has been adjusted to be more like real soccer games than Super Mario Strikers and features 11 vs. 11 battles. The horse racing mode offers a number of horses with different stats to choose from, and players can keep up to 16 horses in a stable. There is also the option to raise a horse's mood by petting, grooming and feeding them.

For each sport, players can partake in single-player tournaments or multiplayer games, with the additional option of online gameplay. There is also a training mode for each sport which has challenges that can be undertaken. The game is also compatible with amiibo cards. Cards could be scanned to unlock Star versions of each character, which have higher stats. They could also unlock the Road to Superstar minigame, where cards are used as barriers in Breakout-inspired gameplay to deflect sports items in order to destroy enemies and blocks. This mode can be used to unlock Superstar status for characters, with even higher stats than the Star status.

Supporting Characters[edit]

These characters are available in the team sports (soccer and baseball).

Legacy[edit]

The game has not had any official follow-up. The next Mario sports game featuring a sport represented in this game was Mario Tennis Aces, which was released for the Nintendo Switch in 2018.
