Raven Beak is a Chozo from the warrior-like Mawkin Tribe who acted as the main antagonist of Metroid Dread.

Background[edit]

Early History[edit]

Raven Beak was a leader of the Mawkin, a tribe of the Chozo who prided themselves as being warriors and considered power to be everything. They were based on ZDR, and Raven Beak was particularly ambitious in wanting as much power over others as he could obtain. The Mawkin ideals were in stark contrast to the peaceful Thoha Tribe. Despite that, the tribes worked together on several occasions. It is known that when Samus Aran was injected with Chozo DNA, one of those strands of DNA was a Mawkin one provided by Raven Beak. Sometime after that, Raven Beak and the Mawkin accompanied the Thoha on a trip to SR388, where the Chozo had bioengineered the Metroids to combat the deadly X Parasite native to the planet. However, the Metroids had grown to become uncontrollable, so the Makwin aided the Thoha in driving back the Metroids so that they could be sealed away, with some Makwin lives being lost in the battle.

The Thoha and Mawkin were divided on how what to do with the Metroids. The Thoha wanted to destroy the planet in order to eliminate the threat posed by both the Metroids and the X Parasite, but Raven Beak and the Mawkin saw the Metroid as a powerful weapon that could be used to establish dominance in the galaxy. Raven Beak turned on the Thoha and had all of them killed except for one, named Quiet Robe. Quiet Robe was kept alive, because only the Thoha had the power to control Metroids, and the Metroids were genetically opposed to the Mawkin. After the massacre, they returned to ZDR for the time being, where Raven Beak had dissenters fed to Drogyga. It was soon discovered that one of their ranks was actually an X Parasite in disguise. In the ensuing chaos and the spread of the X Parasite, all of the other Mawkin were wiped out save for Raven Beak, who was able to seal the X Parasites within Elun. After the crisis was resolved, Raven Beak also saw that his plan to control the Metroids was no longer possible, as during that time span, Samus had wiped out all of the Metroids (as depicted in Metroid II: The Return of Samus/Metroid: Samus Returns).

Dread[edit]

A new plan eventually formed. Raven Beak somehow learned that Samus was injected with Metroid DNA during the events of Metroid Fusion and saw her potential to become the ultimate warrior if her Metroid DNA was fully awakened. He surmised that the Metroid powers were likely being suppressed by the Thoha DNA within her. Because she had his DNA as well, he saw Samus as his daughter and sought to guide her. Because of this, he engineered the events of Metroid Dread. He leaked video footage of an X Parasite on ZDR to get the Federation's attention. They initially sent a squad of seven EMMI robots to investigate, but Raven Beak was able to capture them and reprogrammed them to hunt Samus instead. Samus herself was finally sent to investigate the missing EMMIs. As she entered a lower region of the planet, Raven Beak appeared and attacked her. This clash caused Samus's Metroid DNA to begin awakening, but she passed out soon afterwards.

As Samus explored ZDR, Raven Beak guided Samus through transmissions in which he posed as the Adam AI. He made the blunder of referring to Samus by her name instead of calling her Lady, as Adam did, although it was not clear when Samus started to suspect that the Adam AI was fake. Through this transmissions, Raven Beak led Samus to believe that his goal was to extract Samus's Metroid DNA, when his ulterior motive was to awaken her DNA so that she could become the ultimate warrior. As Samus explored the planet, the X Parasite was released, and Quiet Robe was killed. Raven Beak also began slipping more of his ideology into his Adam transmissions, as he talked about turning Samus into a worthy opponent for Raven Beak.

Raven Beak was based within his floating fortress, Itorash. Once Samus arrived there, he communicated through another Adam transmission in which he made his intentions clear and proposed that Samus work with him in taking over the universe now that her Metroid powers have awakened. Samus opposed him by opening fire upon the supposed Adam computer, revealing that it was just an illusion in front of the real Raven Beak. Raven Beak was disappointed by her defiance and battled with her. It was a long and arduous battle that Samus appeared to have won. But Raven Beak was then able to turn the tables on her and gripped her neck. He was ready to kill her and use her as the basis for a clone army that he could use for his quest of domination. However, this actually caused Samus's DNA to awaken ona deeper level, transforming her into an inhuman being with grander power. With this power, she was able to easily defeat Raven Beak and caused Itorash to fall down to ZDR. Raven Beak was then infected by an X Parasite, which transformed him into Raven Beak X, a giant monster possessing features from various creatures of ZDR. In this form, he was easily wiped out by Samus's new Hyper Beam. The planet ZDR was destroyed just minutes afterwards, marking the end of Raven Beak.

Trivia[edit]

  • Raven Beak was first seen in the Chozo Memories gallery within Metroid: Samus Returns, which depicted events involving the Chozo that transpired on SR388. It concluded with hinting at Raven Beak's betrayal and massacre of the Thoha. He would make his full appearance in Dread, which revealed his name and the details of the events on SR388.
