Fracktail is the boss of the first chapter in Super Paper Mario.

Background

Fracktail was the robotic dragon guardian of a Pure Heart. He was programmed by the Ancients 1,500 years ago to defend the heart until the legendary hero arrived, and then give it to the hero. Since then he has been waiting within the Yold Ruins.

When Mario, the legendary hero, does finally arrive, Fracktail recognizes him and prepares to part with the Pure Heart. However, Dimentio arrives and scrambles Fracktail's circuitry, causing him to attack Mario.

Fracktail will swoop at Mario from various angles until Mario jumps onto his back. While on Fracktail's back, Mario can pick up the Frackles found there and throw them at Fracktail's antenna to damage him, while also trying to stay aboard when the dragon performs aerial loops. After Mario defeats Fracktail, the dragon apologizes for attacking him and explodes.

Trivia

• Fracktail bears a bit of resemblance to Hooktail from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, except that he is based on a Chinese dragon. He does follow the same naming scheme as well.
• When first scanning Mario for information about him, Fracktail's eyes turn into the symbol used while the Wii is downloading new information. Also, when Fracktail's circuits are crashing, he shouts, "I AM ERROR," a reference to Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.
• A trophy of Fracktail appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
