NES Open Tournament Golf is a golf game for the NES that features Mario and Luigi as golfers. The Japanese version is called Mario Open Golf and is different from the American version in some ways.

Gameplay

NES Open Tournament Golf has three courses: US Course, Japan Course, and UK Course. As with any golf game, the aim on any course is to hit the ball across the green and into the hole.

There are several different modes. Stroke Play allows the player to move up in rank. In Match Play, the player is challenged by a computer player. Tournament Mode gives the player the choice to choose Stroke Play or Match Play. Depending on the player's score and rank, they can earn prize money.

There is also Clubhouse Mode that acts as an Option menu.

Legacy

This is notable as the first sports game to feature Mario. Additionally, Golf seems to take some inspiration from this game.

Ports/Remakes

• The American version was released for the PlayChoice-10 arcade machines as Mario's Open Golf in 1991.
• It was released for download as part of each iteration of the [[Virtual Console: for the Wii Virtual Console in 2007, the 3DS Virtual Console in 2012 and the Wii U Virtual Console in 2014. On the 3DS, it had also been made available for free as a part of the limited promotional event known as the Ambassador Program in 2011.
• In 2016, it was among the games included in the Japanese edition of the NES Classic Edition, known as the Famicom Mini.
• In October 2018. it was among the classic NES games that were made available to play through the Nintendo Switch Online service. This version included cooperative and competitive online multiplayer options.
