Lapras is a marine reptile-like Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games.

Information

Lapras is a gentle and intelligent Pokémon that can understand human speech. They act as a source of transportation across water, as they like to ferry people and Pokémon on their backs, which apparently is a comfortable ride. They sing enchanting cries when in good moods. Lapras rarely fight, but this passive nature has led to many of them being caught, and they have been hunted almost to extinction. At evenings, Lapras have been known to sing plaintive songs to seek out what few other members of their race remain.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen, a Lapras is given to the player by an employee at Silph Co. In FireRed/LeafGreen, Lapras could also rarely be found by surfing at Icefall Cave.

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, a single Lapras appeared in the lake at the bottom floor of Union Cave ever Friday night. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, they also appeared at the Safari Zone's Rocky Beach area. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Lapras could be uncommonly found by surfing in the deeper area of Victory Road. In Black and White, Lapras was rarely found in surfing spots at Village Bridge.

Other Games

In Pokémon Snap, Lapras could be photographed at the Beach. In Pokémon Pinball, it was caught at Saffron City. Lapras also appeared in Hey You, Pikachu!, where it could ferry Pikachu to Cobalt Island when summoned by the harmonica island. In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, a Shadow Lapras could be snagged from Cipher Admin Eldes at Citadark Isle, and after being purified it could be transferred to any of the third generation color versions. In Pokémon Channel, it appeared at Cobalt Coast on clear and rainy nights.

In Pokémon Trozei!, Lapras was found at Secret Storage 14, Trozei Battle and Mr. Who's Den. Within Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team, Lapras could be recruited at the forty-fifth through fiftieth floors of Far-off Sea, while in Red Rescue Team a Wonder Mail Code had to be used to unlock a mission to rescue a Lapras on the second floor of Tiny Woods. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Lapras could be recruited at Bottomless Sea. A non-playable Lapras also acted as a ferry to the Hidden Land and also revealed some background information involving Wigglytuff and Chatot.

In Pokémon Ranger, it was found at Fall City. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it could be found at Lapras Beach and Rand's House. Lapras also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Rocky Beach. In PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure, a Lapras appeared at the Beach Zone and provided transportation to the Iceberg Zone.

• In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Lapras appeared as an Advanced-rank Support Spirit that had the effect of raising a player fighter's weapon resistance. When fought against in a Spirit battle, the Spirit of the Lapras would possess the Ice Climbers in a battle where the player has reduced buoyancy. in Adventure Mode, Lapras's Spirit could also be utilized on the overworld map. At the southwestern shore of the Light Realm's eastern continent, having Lapras's Spirit would cause Lapras to appear and act as a ferry to carry the player to the southeastern island area.

Other Media

• In the Pokémon anime, Lapras was first shown in a Christmas-themed episode of the Indigo League series where it helped Ash and his friends to reunite Jynx with Santa Claus. A Lapras was later featured in the Orange Islands season where Ash acquired one (a baby) after saving it from a group of thieves. It acted as the group's primary method of transportation across the islands until the end of the season, when Ash released the Lapras to be with its family. Ash was reunited with the Lapras in a Johto series episode. Other Lapras have made smaller opponents belonging to other trainers as well as Pryce.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Blue was shown catching a wild Lapras and giving it to a child during a flashback in the Yellow chapter. Lapras played a more important role in the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc, where Pryce had lost two Lapras that he loved in an avalanche when he was young. Their egg survived and became one of his main Pokémon, but the grief drove Pryce to engineer a plot to steal Celebi and travel through time. After Pryce was ultimately trapped in time, the baby Lapras was still able to reunite with its lost family.

Trivia

• Lapras's English name is translated from its Japanese name, but the Japanese name could be more accurately translated as Laplace, which could be a reference to the French phrase "la place" (meaning seat, which would refer to its back being used as a seat by the people and Pokémon it ferries) or Pierre-Simon Laplace (a mathematician who wrote books about the mathematical properties of seas and waves).
• It is based on the Loch Ness monster and also resembles the prehistoric animal plesiosaurus.
