Squirtle is a blue water-spouting turtle-like Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games as one of the original three starter Pokémon offered by Professor Oak. It is the first in a three-stage evolutionary line, with its evolved forms being Wartortle and Blastoise.

Information

At birth, Squirtles have soft shells that soon harden so that if impacted by a prodding, the surface will bounce back out. Its shell offers protection from danger and also streamlines the body to allow Squirtles to swim faster. After withdrawing into the hell, it is able to expel a powerful burst of foam at opponents.

Squirtle can evolve into an Wartortle at Level 16. While it learns all the attacks that its evolutions learn, it learns them much sooner. Therefore it can be advantageous to prolong its evolution in order to learn moves sooner.

Choosing Squirtle generally determines the game's difficulty. The Squirtle is advantageous against Brock's Rock-type Pokémon and traveling through the Geodude rich Rock Cavern. However, it is equally matched against Misty's water types and weak against the next two gym leaders afterwards.

Squirtle is one of three optional starter Pokémon offered by Professor Oak in the Red, Green, Blue, FireRed and LeafGreen Versions. The only other early game in which Squirtle is obtainable is Pokémon: Yellow Version, where a Squirtle is given to Red by a police officer after Ash claims the Thunder Badge.

Squirtle (as well as the other first generation starter Pokémon) had been exclusive to the first generation and its remakes until Pokémon: HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions, when Professor Oak would offer Gold/Lyra the choice of one of the original starter Pokémon as a special reward after they defeat Red at the end of the game.

Other Games

Squirtle can be caught in Viridian City while playing on the Blue Table in Pokémon Pinball. Squirtle also appeared in Hey You, Pikachu! as one of Pikachu's friends. During the first Little Lost Poliwag mission, he took the missing Poliwag that Pikachu found back to their mother and gave him a reward, as well as sometime showing up at Bulbasaur's place to try his food. In Pokémon Stadium, Squirtle can be awarded to the player by Professor Oak after the player completes Gym Leader Castle. Bulbasaur could then be transferred to any of the four first generation games. Squirtle appears in Pokémon Puzzle League as one of Ash's controllable Pokémon. Squirtle is found in the valley in Pokémon Snap.

In Pokémon Channel, a Squirtle named Spencer hosts the Shop 'n' Squirtle Channel, and a Squirtle is given to the player by Professor Oak. Within Pokémon Trozei!, Squirtle can be found in Huge Storage 4, Endless Level 15, Trozei Battle or Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Squirtle is one of the starter Pokémon that the player is transformed into (depending on their personality), and Squirtle can also be found at the eight through twelfth floors of Waterfall Pond in the first game or the first twenty-four basement floors of End Lake in the second. In Pokémon Ranger, Squirtle can be found in the Underground Waterway. Squirtle can be found at Ranger School and the Marine Cave in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia. In Pokémon Rumble. it appears at the Bright Beach. A Squirtle also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Safari Zone.

Brawl

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Squirtle has a moveset based on his attacks in the games. Its special moves are as follows:

• Standard Special Move: Watergun - Squirtle simply sprays water at the opponent.
• Side Special Move: Withdraw - Squirtle withdraws into its shell and briefly slides along the ground, providing a more offensive move than the actual attack.
• Up Special Move: Waterfall - Squirtle summons a large wave and temporarily rides it, which acts as an extra jump.
• Down Special Move: Pokémon Change - This is not an actual attack; instead the Pokémon Trainer switches Squirtle out for the next Pokémon in the roster, which is Ivysaur.
• Final Smash: Triple Finish - All three of the Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon unleash their most powerful attacks at the same time in the same direction. The attack Squirtle uses is Hydro Pump. This move can only be used when a Smash Ball is activated.

Video Games

• Within the Super Smash Bros. series, Squirtle has appeared in several games as a playable fighter. Squirtle acts as part of a team of three Pokémon that Pokémon Trainer can switch between in battle, with the other two Pokémon being Ivysaur and Charizard. This team was featured in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but Squirtle and Ivysaur were left out of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U in favor of making Charizard a solo fighter. In battle, Squirtle utilizes a variety of moves from the Pokémon games, and for the team's Final Smash, the three Pokémon come together to unleash powerful attacks at the same time in a move known as Triple Finish. Squirtle's contribution to this move is Hydro Pump.
  • Squirtle has also been represented by a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee, two trophies (one being of the Triple Finish) and a sticker in Brawl, a trophy in the 3DS/Wii U game and a Fighter Spirit in Ultimate. Squirtle's Brawl trophy was gained through Squirtle delivering the final blow in Classic Mode, while in Ultimate, all three Fighter Spirits of the Pokémon team are unlocked together upon Pokémon Trainer's completion of Classic Mode.
  • Within Brawl's "The Subspace Emissary", Squirtle was the only Pokémon Red had on him when he first entered the story. He would later obtain Ivysaur and Charizard while traveling with Lucas.
• In Super Mario Maker, Squirtle appeared as a potential Mystery Mushroom costume that Mario could transform into. It was unlocked through the event course called "I Choose You!". The course has three split paths based on the first generation starters, and Squirtle's path would have to be completed to unlock its costume.

Other Media

• In the Pokémon anime series, Ash gained a Squirtle who had originally been part of a gang of firefighting Squirtles that all wore shades. Gary also had a Squirtle, which was his starter Pokémon. May also has a young Squirtle as well.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Squirtle was Green's starter Pokémon but was never seen, as it had evolved into Wartortle by the time Green first appeared.
