He has also subjected himself to training in the waves near Dewford and the dark Granite Cave, and it is also known that he once trained with Bruno of Kanto and Johto's Elite Four. His gym was constructed in the manner of a maze and was filled with darkness, mimicking the darkness of the Granite Cave, with only a small light surrounding a challenging trainer that grew with each enemy trainer that was defeated. he also often made metaphorical comparisons to waves.
In Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, he was challenged and defeated by Brendan/May. He told the challenger that he/she had made a much bigger splash than he had expected and awarded them with the Knuckle Badge as well as TM 08: Bulk Up, foreseeing a bright future for the young trainer. In Emerald, he could then be challenged to several rematches.
