NES Open Tournament Golf is a golf game for the NES. The Japanese version is called Mario Open Golf and is different from the American version in some ways.
Gameplay
NES Open Tournament Golf has three course: US Course, Japan Course, and UK Course. The aim is, of course, to hit the ball across the green and into the hole.
There are several different modes. Stroke Play allows the player to move up in rank. In Match Play, the player is challenged by a computer player. Tournament Mode gives the player the choice to choose Stroke Play or Match Play. Depending on the player's score and rank, they'll earn prize money.
There is also Clubhouse Mode that acts as an Option menu.
Legacy
This is notable as the first sports game to feature Mario. Additionally, Golf is thought to be loosely based on this game.
Ports/Remakes
- The American version was released for the PlayChoice-10 arcade machines as Mario's Open Golf in 1991.
- It was released for download over the Wii's Virtual Console in 2007.
- In 2011, it was among the NES games that were released for free download as part of the 3DS's Ambassador Program. It has yet to receive a normal eShop release.
