Gulley is a supporting character from The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds who appeared as one of the game's seven sages.

Background

Gulley was the young son of a local blacksmith and his wife. He was also good friends with his father's apprentice, Link. Gulley would often visit his home to wake him up due to Link's habit of oversleeping and being late for work. Gulley also spent a lot of time in a nearby grove, where he stood atop a tree stump while various woodland animals came out to see him. The animals were drawn to him, but they scattered whenever anyone else came near.

During the events of A Link Between Worlds, Gulley had woken Link up for work yet again and also taught the player how to use weather vanes to save the game. He went off to play in the grove afterwards, but he went missing. Link could only find a pouch that Gulley had made as a gift for him. It ultimately turned out that Yuga had captured him and turned him into a painting with his magic due to his status as one of the seven new sages. The paintings of the seven sages and Princess Zelda were then used by Yuga in a ritual to revive Ganon. Afterwards, the paintings were distributed to different bosses across Lorule. Gulley's painting was kept in the Dark Palaca until Link saved him by destroying the Gemesaur King. This caused Gulley to awaken as a sage, and he was teleported to the Chamber of Sages. He pretended to be scared, only to laugh it off and claim that he was fine because of his new role. He was excited by being a sage, even if he did not completely understand what it meant and referred to it as being a "Sevensage".

Once all of the sages were freed, they combined their powers to summon the Triforce of Courage for Link. After the crisis was resolved, the sages were all returned to Hyrule, and Gulley was reunited with his family. During the ending credits, he was seen waving on his stump within the grove, surrounded by his animal friends and with his parents nearby.

Trivia

• His name seems to be a play on the color "green"
• Gulley's presence in the grove acts as an homage to the Flute/Ocarina Boy from A Link to the Past, who stood upon a stump in what seemed to be the same grove and similarly drew in woodland animals.
