Metapod is a cocoon Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation Pokémon games. It is the middle form of Caterpie's evolutionary line and evolves into Butterfree. It also has a foil in the form of Kakuna.
Information
Metapod is the cocoon form of Caterpie which can evolve from Caterpie at Level 7. Its body within the shell is weak and soft, although its shell is sturdy. Metapod most constantly harden its shell to protect itself, but it can pop out of its shell with large impacts. The shell is as hard as an iron slab, but Metapod's primary action is hardening. Its general lack of movement is because Metapod focuses its energy on preparing its soft innards for evolution from within its shell.
Metapod's metamorphosis does not last long, as it evolves into Butterfree at Level 10.

Mainstream Games
In Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen versions, Metapod can be found in Viridian Forest, being common in all of the above games except for Red where it is uncommon. In Red, Blue, FireRed and LeafGreen, Metapod is also found in Route 25, while in Blue it was also found on Route 24 and in FireRed and LeafGreen it was also found in the Pattern Bush.
In Pokémon Gold, Crystal and HeartGold, it is commonly found in Routes 2, 30 and 31 as well as Ilex Forest and the National Park, while in Crystal it is also found in Routes 24 and 25 and in HeartGold it is also found in Viridian Forest. In Silver and SoulSilver it is uncommon and can only be found in the National Park during the Bug-Catching Contest.
In Pokémon: Diamond, Pearl and Platinum Version, Metapod could be found in Eterna Forest using the dongle method with FireRed in the GBA slot. In Pokémon: White Version, Metapod uncommonly appear on Route 12.

Other Games
In Pokémon Pinball, Metapod could be found by evolution. In Pokémon Snap, Metapod could be found in the River area. In Pokémon Stadium, Metapod and Kakuna are featured in the Rock Harden minigame in addition to being available as Rental Pokémon. In Hey You, Pikachu!, the Caterpie that Pikachu takes care of in the Caring for Caterpie missions grow into Metapod and eventually Butterfree after enough time passes. Metapod also appears in Pokémon Stadium 2, Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.
In Pokémon Trozei!, Metapod is found in SOL Laboratory 2, Secret Storage 8, Endless Level 4 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Metapod could be found in the seventh and eight floors of the Joyous Tower while in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness and Time, Metapod are found in the first thirteen basement floors of the Mystifying Forest, the twenty-nine basement floors of the Mystery Jungle and the first nineteen basement floors of the Happy Outlook. In the former game, a non-playable Metapod also appears as a friend of Caterpie. Metapod also appears in the Silent Forest area of Pokémon Rumble.
In PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure, it was found at the Haunted Zone. In Pokémon Rumble Blast, it appeared at Sun-Dappled Bank.

In Other Media
- Metapod appears in two episodes of the Pokémon anime after Ash's Caterpie, his own Pokémon, evolves. After Ash saves it from a swarm of Beedrill and promises to take better care of it, it evolves into a Butterfree. Another Metapod was shown belonging to a character named Samurai, which entered an inconclusive battle with Ash's own Metapod. Other Metapod have also made appearances throughout the anime. During the Johto series, Metapod was featured as part of Bugsy's team and was notably formidable due to knowing moves aside from Harden, but it eventually fell to Ash's Pikachu. One episode of the Battle Frontier series featured a Caterpie that became giant from too many Rare Candies, and it spent some time as a giant Metapod before evolving into Butterfree.
- In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Metapod initially made a minor appearance during the first chapter of the Red/Green/Blue arc where it was amongst the Pokémon that escaped from Professor Oak's laboratory. Yellow's Caterpie also evolved into a Metapod during the climax of the Yellow arc, and but it spent only a brief amount of time in this form before evolving into Butterfree. Bugsy was also shown with a pair of Metapod alongside a pair of Kakuna as his main Pokémon during the Gold/Silver arc.
- In the Electric Tale of Pikachu manga, Ash's Caterpie evolved into a Metapod abruptly while Ash was showing off his Pokémon to Misty following his arrival at Cerulean City. Ash used it during his gym battle with Misty, and some jokes were made at its expense until it evolved in time to save the match.
Trivia
- Metapod's name is a combination of "metamorphosis" and "pod".
