Debut Pokémon: Black/White Versions 2

Roxie is a Pokémon trainer who appears as the second gym leader of the Unova region who acts as an opponent in Pokémon: Black and White Versions 2. She is one of the three new gym leaders shown in the sequel games and one of the two of those gym leaders to be entirely new characters. She specializes in Poison-type Pokémon.

Background[edit]

The daughter of a sailor, Roxie was a Pokémon trainer who also played bass guitar and sangs as the leader of a rock band. She became the gym leader of Virbank City's gym and combined her interests by making her gym into an underground rock club, where her band constantly performed on stage. She would not notice trainers attempting to challenge her over the sound of her own music, so challengers would first have to defeat her bandmates, Roughneck Nicky and Guitarist Billy Jo.

In Black 2 and White 2, Roxie was first seen arguing with her father and trying to dissuade him from pursuing an acting career at Pokéstar Studios, as she thought that this would distract him too much from his sailing job. She then returned to her gym, where she could be challenged and defeated by Nate/Rosa. She scolded herself in the third person for her loss, but she did also recognize that she had given her battle her all and felt refreshed and revitalized as a result. Roxie gave the trainer the Toxic Badge as well as TM09: Venoshock. She told Nate/Rose that their Pokémon wanted this win and that they should keep on going on like that. Afterwards, Roxie coordinated an effort to catch members of Team Plasma within and near the city, in fear of her Pokémon being taken. After Nate/Rosa and Hugh were successful in stopping the local Team Plasma members, she gave them HM01: Cut.

Despite her initial hostility about the idea, Roxie did watch at least one of her father's movies from Pokéstar Studios and liked it. She helped him to feel better about his performance and said that she'd be supportive of him if he did not cause trouble. Afterwards, Roxie was seen by Driftveil City, where she came to check out the Pokémon World Tournament. She ultimately entered it and could be battled in the Driftveil, Unova Leaders, World Leaders and Type Expert divisions. Roxie also sometimes visited Cynthia at her villa during the summer.

Pokémon Roster[edit]

In battle, Roxie uses a Koffing and a Whirlipede, as well as a Grimer in Challenge Mode.

For tournament battles, her roster could include some or all of the following Pokémon:

In Other Pokémon Games[edit]

In Pokémon Masters EX, Roxie and her Whirlipede appear together as a playable sync pair that could be recruited at random through the game's Sync Pair Scout feature. Her Whirlipede could evolve into Scolipede through a Sync Pair Story in which she had to battle Mina in a one-on-one fight. Roxie was also featured as an ally in the "The Beast that Devours the Sun" Legendary Event and as an opponent in the "Heart of Elegance" Story Event. In the latter event, Roxie entered an argument that Caitlin and Candice were having about the most important aspect of a Pokémon battle. Caitlin promoted elegance and grace, while Candice said that it was focus, and Roxie interjected that it was the beat of the battle. The player, Caitlin and Candice then had to defeat Roxie, at which point Caitlin accepted that the most important aspect was different for every individual. Roxie was also featured in the "Summer Superstars" Story Event, where Scottie/Bettie, Lyra and Steven Stone had to defeat the team made up by her, Lisia and Ryuki in order to win the Pasio Superstar Competition. Roxie implied that she was competing as a way to motivate her dad, although she embarrassed herself in the process and quickly claimed otherwise. In an extra scene for the "Champion Time" Story Event, she and Ryuki met Piers, who was a fan of both of their music, and the three of them decided to perform together.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • Roxie was featured in a two-part episode of the Pokémon anime during the Unova-based series. In this series, she was the eighth gym leader who Ash defeated to earn his final badge, in a deviation from the order in the games. Roxie's band was named Koffing and the Toxics.
  • She also appeared in the Pokémon Adventures manga during the Black 2/White 2 arc. She had been appointed as a judge for the Autumn Choral Competition and helped to take on Team Plasma.

Trivia[edit]

  • Her English name seems to be a play on 'rock' and 'toxic'. Her Japanese name is Homika, based on the Japanese name for a strychnine tree, which is a poisonous plant.
  • Roxie's appearance in the anime aired prior to the release of Black 2/White 2, technically making that her actual first appearance.
  • In her gym, she sings a song spelling out "Pokémon". In the Japanese version, her song instead spells out the Japanese name for Koffing.
  • Roxie is mentioned by Professor Burnet in Pokémon Dream Radar as someone from Unova who she has heard of.
