Debut Kirby Super Star

Dyna Blade is a giant bird who has made recurring appearances in the Kirby series after first appearing as the antagonist of her own self-titled mode within Kirby Super Star. She was motivated by a simple desire to feed her chicks, and later appearances have tended to consist of cameo appearances or acting as an ally to Kirby.

Background[edit]

Dyna Blade was a large and powerful bird with rainbow wings that have white bladed tips. She struck her enemies by swooping around and attacking with her talons or beak. She could also breathe fire, and only her head was vulnerable to attacks. She was the protective mother to three chicks who stayed at her nest.

Within the "Dyna Blade" game of Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra, Dyna Blade stole the local crops in order to feed her children. Kirby followed Dyna Blade's trail to her nest and battled her. After defeating her, Kirby found her chicks and realized what her motivations had been. He proceeded to bring the chicks over to Whispy Woods and fed them apples. This seemed to earn Dyna Blade's appreciation, as she repaid the favor through an appearance in "Revenge of Meta Knight", in which she appeared at one point to catch Kirby after he had been knocked off of his Warp Star and flew him to the Halberd. Dyna Blade's boss battle could also be re-fought in The Arena. In Kirby Super Star Ultra, the "Meta Knightmare Ultra" sub-game included versions of both "Dyna Blade" and "Revenge of Meta Knight" in which Meta Knight took Kirby's place.

In Kirby Air Ride, Dyna Blade appeared as part of an event in City Trial mode in which she would land in random spots throughout the city and would drop items when her head was attacked. She would fly to a second location after being attacked, unless the event's duration had come to an end, in which case she would leave. She also appeared in the "Kirby Quest" sub-game of Kirby Mass Attack, in which she could be summoned as one of Kirby's Awesome attacks, which involved her divebombing a group of enemies. In Kirby Fighters Deluxe and Kirby Fighters 2, Dyna Blade appeared as a boss enemy who was battled at the Dyna Blade's Nest stage, with the same attacks as in her original appearance.

Cameo Appearances[edit]

  • In Kirby Super Star Ultra, she is featured on one of the cards in the new "Kirby Card Swipe" minigame.
  • Dyna Blade's likeness has been featured in collectible items in several games: a rare Keychain in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, a sticker of her head in Kirby: Planet Robobot, a sticker in Super Kirby Clash (using her Super Star Ultra artwork) and a Character Treat in Kirby's Dream Buffet (using her Super Star sprite).
  • In Kirby Battle Royale, there is a headgear available for Sword Kirby known as the Dyna Helmet that is based on Dyna Blade.
  • In Kirby Star Allies, Dyna Blade made a background cameo appearance as a silhouette flying in the distance behind Castle Dedede on the world map, appearing only after completing Story Mode and after the version 2.0.0 update at the end of March 2018.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Kirby anime series, Dyna Blade was featured in three episodes and made a number of cameo appearances. Depicted with a 3-D model and completely metallic wings, Dyna Blade was referred to as a legendary bird who was only seen once every hundred years. It was depicted with only one chick, which was referred to as Dyna Chick. In her first appearance, King Dedede tricked Kirby into eating Dyna Blade's egg, which set her on a rampage against Kirby until it turned out that her chick had already left the egg prior to Kirby consuming it. Her other appearances similarly involved her going into action when her chick was endangered, with one episode featuring another misunderstanding pitting her against Kirby while the other had her battle an evil crow named Crowemon who had an army of mind-controlled birds.

Trivia[edit]

  • Dyna Blade's name is a simple combination of "dynamic" and "blade".
  • Dyna Blade has occasionally been erroneously referred to with male pronouns, such as in the English instruction manual for Kirby Super Star and within Kirby Air Ride.
  • She is the only boss from Kirby Super Star to not have a stronger version in the remake.
