Quarlog was one of a thousand baby apes chosen to inhabit a natural gorilla preserve which was built on a small planetoid with an artificial atmosphere. He grew up to become the leader of the colony. However, mysterious attacks on his planet in 2000 attracted The Monkey, A Jedi gorilla who was supposed to be a member of the colony but wound up being sent to S-Space instead. Quarlog distrusted The Monkey and his affections for his sister. The mysterious attacks turned out to be works of Lupus the Turk, who wanted the gorillas for his new army. Despite their efforts and Jedi bodyguard, the gorillas were subdued by the TWIFATIT. But Lupus wanted an even one thousand gorillas-The Monkey made 1001. One of them had to go, and Lupus's goons chose to shoot the gorilla elder. Quarlog held The Monkey responsible and deepened his grudge.
