Ciela is a fairy-like character who was featured as Link's primary companion in The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.

Background[edit]

Ciela was a fairy-like spirit who served the Ocean King Oshus alongside her counterparts Leaf and Neri. She was the Spirit of Courage and Time with powers to create time-freezing Phantom Spheres. However, they were all attacked by Bellum, who drained Oshus's power. The spirits were captured and kept within temples by powerful monsters. Ciela only partially avoided this fate by splitting herself in two, and she wound up losing her powers and memories in battle with Bellum. One half was captured and held within the Temple of Courage at Molida Island. The other half of Celia woke up on Mercay Island's shore with no memory and was taken in by Oshus, who was in the form of an old hermit. Ciela came to think of herself as a normal fairy and affectionately called Oshus "Grandpa", as he decided to keep both of their true natures a secret to her for the time being.

She one day found Link when he washed up ashore. Ciela was surprised to hear that Link had a friend who was taken away by the Ghost Ship and went to tell Oshus as she knew he had information on the Ghost Ship. Oshus tried to stop Link from learning more, but Ciela insisted that Oshus help him to find his friend. The sailor Linebeck had recently stopped by asking about the same ship, and Ciela volunteered to help Link find him. They found him within the Temple of the Ocean King, and the two instantly clashed, as Ciela criticized Linebeck for his selfishness and cowardly nature. Together, they explored the sea and wound up saving the other two spirits from the temples in which they were imprisoned. Ciela acted as a general guide for Link and sometimes helped him to communicate with others.

The time came when they freed the Spirit of Courage from the Temple of Courage. This was the half which Ciela split off and only contained her missing powers. Ciela was unaware of this at first, and the blank spirit simply joined with them until Oshus appeared outside the temple to explain the truth. Oshus then used his powers to fuse Ciela with the Spirit of Courage. She noted a feeling that nothing and everything was different at the same time. At Oshus's urging, Ciela focused her power with that of the other spirits in order to detect Tetra's cries for help. Ciela was then able to guide Link to the Ghost Ship's location. They were able to save Tetra, but they found she had been petrified into stone. Oshus appeared to them at this time and revealed his true nature as the Ocean King. He also apologized to Ciela for deceiving her earlier.

It was not until the final battle against Bellum that Ciela unlocked her true memories as the Spirit of Courage and Time by touching a Phantom Sphere that Bellum had regurgitated. She then regained her true powers to make Phantom Spheres and formed several throughout the battle, which Link was able to use to attack Bellum. Oshus teleported them to safety afterwards, but they were called back into action when Bellum possessed Linebeck. Ciela tried to help again and was seized by one of Bellum's tentacles. She was still able to charge Link's Phantom Sword with time-freezing ability. Link was able to use this to finish off Bellum and free Linebeck. Oshus's true form as restored. While the others were to be returned to their own "world", Ciela had to stay by Oshus's side. She and Linebeck continued to bicker in their last conversation, after he pulled at her wings. She still thanked him as she floated away from him, and Linebeck looked back at her with a frown, implying that they had grown fonder of each other. Ciela told Link that she wished they could continue to travel together, but she had to fulfill her duty to the Ocean King. She left Link with a farewell and a thank you.

Abilities[edit]

Ciela initially acts primarily as a source of advice. After she becomes the Spirit of Courage again, she can also augment Link's strength with sword beams once Courage Gems are offered at Spirit Island. Oshus also mentions that the ability to detect evil is one of her spirit powers, which is demonstrated when she is able to track the Ghost Ship. Her more potent ability, which she only regains in the final battle, is the ability to create Phantom Spheres. These temporarily freeze time when Link uses them.
