Navi is the fairy companion of Link who was featured in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Background[edit]
Since Link was a Hylian, he grew up without having a fairy companion, making him stand out from the Kokiri. When the Great Deku Tree grew ill from Queen Gohma, he assigned Navi to accompany Link. Navi's first impression of Link was that he was a lazy child, but her opinion of him changed as she accompanied him and assisted him.
Although Navi did not provide assistance in the form of healing or attack, she did provide Link with helpful information about enemies and environments as well as advice about his next course of action. She also helped Link to target enemies. She was a constant companion in Link's quest, even going seven years in the future along with him. Although Ganondorf's power initially prevented Navi from helping Link in the final battle, she was able to help Link after Ganon transformed into Ganon. After Ganon's defeat, Link and Navi were sent back to the past timeline. At this point, Navi departed and was not seen again. Link eventually went on a personal journey into the Lost Woods in search of her, which initiated the events of Majora's Mask.
Other Appearances[edit]
Video Games[edit]
- In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Navi is seen accompanying Link when he draws the Master Sword in The Subspace Emissary.
Other Media[edit]
- Navi appeared in the Ocarina of Time manga as Link's traveling companion, in a role identical to her game role. At the end, Navi mentions her reason for leaving by saying that Link had become a great hero so she could return in peace to the forest. Additionally, Navi is shown as the friend Link is looking for in the Majora's Mask manga.
Trivia[edit]
- Navi was originally created as part of the Z-targeting, with a tentative name being the "Fairy Navigation System". The name "Navi" was then derived from "navigation". It was after Navi was named that developers began forming ideas for her storyline role and making her an actual character, beyond her initial gameplay role.
- Although Navi is the first canonical fairy companion (and overall companion) shown for Link within the series, her presence was preceded by depictions of Link with fairy companions in other media such as Spryte in the cartoon series, Miff in the Valiant comic series, Epheremelda in the A Link to the Past comic adaptation and Felicia in the Link's Awakening manga. Additionally, Miyamoto initially conceived of a fairy character to be part of Link's party in an early stage of development for A Link to the Past, which would have specialized in reconnaissance.
- Her voice clips were later recycled for Ciela in Phantom Hourglass.
- In Hyrule Warriors, there is a fairy that appears at the beginning of the "Land of Myth" scenario to ask Impa and Sheik for help. In the North American version of the original Wii U release of the game, the fairy was referred to as Navi. However, this name was not present in the European or Japanese versions of the game, nor in the North American releases of the ports of Hyrule Warriors, indicating that the fairy was not actually intended to be Navi.
- In Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, an area called Nabi Lake (using the Japanese spelling of her name) is named in reference to her.
