Jynx is a human-like Pokémon most well-known for the controversy surrounding the character in North America, due to her resemblance to an African American stereotype. Jynx evolves from Smoochum at Level 30.
Information
Unlike most Pokémon, Jynx resembles a human moreso than a type of animal. Jynk speaks a language that is incomprehensive but sounds similar to human speech. This has led scientists to research ways to translate a Jynx's speech. It also communicates through dancing, particularly a swaying of the hips. It can also influence people nearby into dancing as well.
As suggested by their appearance, all Jynx are females. They are capable of producing Pokémon with a similar male Pokémon or a Ditto.
Appearances
Mainstream Games
In Pokémon: Red, Green, Blue, FireRed and LeafGreen Versions, only one Jynx can be acquired by trading a Poliwhirl to a girl in Cerulean City. Lorelei of the Elite Four also uses a Jynx in battle, as part of her team of Ice-type Pokémon.
In Gold, Silver and Crystal versions, wild Jynx are found in the Ice Path. In Crystal they only appear in the morning and daytime. In these games, Will of the Elite Four uses a Jynx in his team of Psychic-type Pokémon. In all other games, Jynx can be obtained only by trading from another game, or by evolving a Smoochum.
Other Games
Jynx can be caught in Cerulean City in Pokémon Pinball. Several Jynx also appear in the Cave area of Pokémon Snap. Playing the Pokéflute will cause the Jynx to sing, and the egg they surround while hatch to reveal an Articuno. Jynx appears in Pokémon Puzzle Challenge as Will's Pokémon. Jynx also appears in Pokémon Stadium and Pokémon Stadium 2.
In Pokémon Trozei!, Jynx is found in Endless Levels 62 and 79, Mr. Who's Den and Forever Level 12. Jynx can only be obtained by evolving Smoochum in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon. In Pokémon Ranger, Jynx is found in the Panulla Cave.
Trivia
- Jynx was originally portrayed in artwork and in-game sprites with dark skin. This led to the controversy in which Jynx was compared with an offensive stereotype of an African American. Starting in the Gameboy Advance games, Jynx was recolored purple to distance her from the controversy.
- Jynx made several appearances in the Pokémon anime, including one Christmas episode from the first season in which a Jynx was shown to be a helper of Santa Claus. But after the controversy about Jynx's color arose, all episodes prominently featuring Jynx were banned from airing, particularly the aforementioned Christmas episode and a later episode called the Ice Cave. Additionally various brief appearances by Jynx were cut out, even after the character was recolored purple.
