Ashley is a recurring character from the WarioWare games. She is a young witch who lives in Diamond City.
Background[edit]
Ashley lives in a rather creepy mansion with her only companion being her devil sidekick, Red. She is usually found mixing different concoctions in her cauldron. Her mysterious powers are so great that she could, purportedly, rule the world if she desired to do so. In general, she's not considered to be very nice and has few friends. She takes her magic seriously and never bothers with 'girly things' like dolls and combing her hair, despite the stuffed animal she carries around.
In WarioWare: Touched!, on one occasion of potion-brewing, she was missing one final ingredient, which she determined to be Orbulon. She sent Red after him, but once it was clear Red would be unable to catch the alien, she changed her mind saying she would use Red as an ingredient instead.
In WarioWare: Smooth Moves, she sought a spell to make her plant grow larger and discovered a talking spellbook. The spellbook eventually taught her the spell she desired, and it turned the plant into a giant, monstrous piranha plant-like venus fly trap. Despite part of her house being destroyed during the growth, she smiled at it.
Her segment in WarioWare: D.I.Y. consists simply of her standing on a dark road with Red. The game over sequence reveals that this is a film called "Magical Witch Ashley" being shot by pumpkin-headed ghosts. Her microgame theme was food-based. Within this game, Ashley and several other game developers had switched over to working at Diamond Software in order to receive actual pay.
In Game & Wario, she decided to transport herself into the page of a book, but she accidentally sent herself to the wrong page. The page was full of candy and sweets, and her minigame consisted of controlling her in escaping from this candy world. Elsewhere in the game, Mona showed surprise at finding a photo of Ashley looking happy.
Ashley was featured again in WarioWare Gold. In the opening, she quickly hung up on Wario before he could explain his newest scheme to her. Her stage was part of the Twist League (based on using the gyro input similar to the gameplay of Twisted!) with a Fantasy theme. In her story, she summoned a demon known as Gahrumble and quickly found that a different demon called Hum Gree was eating all of the demon realm's food. This caused her to go on a quest into the demon realm, which ended in her turning Hum into a harmless and fluffy version of himself. Ashley and Red were then able to invite Garumble to eat out with them.
Within Gold, Ashley and Red also appeared during the Potluck Gang stage of the Ultra League. They went on a camping trip with Orbulon, 5-Volt, 9-Volt, 18-Volt, Dribble and Spitz. As part of the accompanying potluck, Red brought explosive oysters, while Ashley brought a poisonous Mandrake root that she referred to as garlic. They played cards together. Afterwards, Ashley joked about whether or not there would be a next time, and Red embarrassed her by pointing out that she seemed to be enjoying herself. Ashley and the others also appeared in the game's ending, where they convinced Wario to share the money from the tournament. She was also featured as a playable character in the Pumpkin Panic minigame, where she had to defend a field of pumpkins from Mandrakes.
Other Appearances[edit]
Video Games[edit]
- Ashley's Song was featured as downloadable content for several Daigasso! Band Brothers games, and in Daigasso! Band Brothers P, it had a music video featuring a montage of Ashley-related moments from the WarioWare games.
- She has had some presence in the Super Smash Bros., from Super Smash Bros. Brawl onwards. Her theme song has been featured as a track for Wario-based levels starting in Brawl, and she appeared as an Assist Trophy starting in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U. When summoned, she created a dark cloud around her that could have a number of random effects such as slowing down opponents or poisoning them. Her clothing, hair and magic wand also appeared as a Mii Fighter outfit that was initially available as DLC in the 3DS/Wii U game and was later available within Ultimate.
- She also appeared as a sticker in Brawl, as a normal trophy in the 3DS/Wii U games, a Smash Tour item (which slows down the spinner) in the Wii U game and as a Support Spirit in Ultimate. Her Support effect as a Spirit was to let a player's Final Smash meter charge more quickly. When fought in a Spirit Battle, she possessed a Mii Fighter wearing her outfit and fought alongside a small Ridley representing Red. Ashley's Assist Trophy also appeared in the beginning of the battle, prior to Ashley's Mii Fighter entering the battle.
- In Paper Airplane Chase, which was based on a WarioWare minigame, she makes a cameo appearance on a sign when the player reaches 150 points in Endless Mode.
- Ashley has appeared in various badges released through the Nintendo Badge Arcade, in a number of themed outfits and sometimes joined by Red. The themes have included the WarioWare series, Yokai Watch, Splatoon, holidays and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. In the latter panel, Ashley was dressed as Link while Red was Tingle. There was also one of her with Nikki, the mascot of Swapnote, the Japanese description of which referred to them as friends. As an April Fools joke in 2017, an adult version of Ashley was featured as the star of a conceptual game called "Crazy Galaxy".
- In Rhythm Heaven Megamix, Ashley appears in the first minigame of the "Wario... Where?" challenge set, where the player has to make her dance along with a pair of monkeys. Red also appears to provide instructions, and a stuffed doll of Ashley could also be seen on a desk at the Rhythm Museum's entrance.
- In Super Mario Maker, Ashley is among the different unlockable forms that Mario can change into with the Mystery Mushroom.
Other Media[edit]
- In 2015, pair of web comic strips were made by Ashley's creator, Ko Takeuchi, to promote the release of Nintendo 3DS Home Menu themes featuring Ashley. The first comic involved Ashley meeting up with her friends on the night of Halloween. In the second strip, Ashley was hired by Barbara to perform at her Live Club. She ends up getting stage fright, claims that she forgot the lyrics and falls asleep on stage.
Trivia[edit]
- She has her own theme song with lyrics.
- In Game & Wario, it is said that her spells only work 40 percent of the time.
- She considers Red to be her best friend and wishes she had more friends.
- Red's trident is apparently part of his body.
