Veran, Sorceress of Shadows, is the main villain of Oracle of Ages. She has a variety of dark powers, the most often-used being her ability of possession.

Background[edit]

Veran was enlisted by Twinrova to disrupt the currents of time and flood humanity with sorrow to light the Torch of Sorrow, one of three torches needed to perform the Dark Rites and revive the Evil King Ganon. She made her way to Labrynna in search of Nayru, the Oracle of Ages who controls time. She got to Naryu's sacred sanctuary by possessing Impa and tricking Link into moving a special boulder than had prevented her from entering. Then Veran possessed Nayru and used her powers to travel back in time four hundred years to start an age of sorrow. Random acts of evil began happening in the present- some people turned into old men, monkeys were driven to extinction and a kid turned to stone.

Veran used Nayru's body to get close to Queen Ambi and manipulate her. Giving her an endless day, she had Ambi work the village people endlessly on constructing Ambi's Tower, which Veran hoped to use for her own twisted purposes. One hitch in the plan came when Link confronted her. He used a combination of Mystery Seeds, a Seed Shooter, his Switch Hook and sword to force Veran out of Nayru's body. But Veran quickly found a new body as she possessed Queen Ambi herself.

Although Nayru undid most of Veran's damage, Ambi's Tower, also known as the Black Tower, was still being constructed and was eventually completed. Standing at the top of the tower, Veran was granted the powers of shadow- powers rivaling Nayru's. The she performed even more random acts of evil in the past like turning some guys and bunnies into stone.

After defeating Ralph with ease, Veran had her rematch with Link at the top of the tower, who used the same techniques from before to force Veran out of Ambi's body. Veran battled Link continuously. First she turned into a giant green fairy-like creature. Then she alternated between three hideous forms: a large hopping turtle, a massive bumblebee and a titanic tarantula. Link continued to fight off Veran until she was finally destroyed. But Veran's death was not in vain- her actions had lit the Flame of Sorrow. Twinrova was one step closer to resurrecting Ganon.

Other Appearances[edit]

  • Veran is featured in the manga adaptation of Oracle of Ages, where she was initially sent to Labrynna to destroy Link due to his defeat of General Onox. However, after possessing Impa and learning of Nayru residing nearby, she tricked Link into leading her there. Afterwards, events proceeded similarly to the game except that Link never forced Veran out of Nayru's body. She did briefly leave her body and possess Ralph to destroy Link's supply of Mystery Seeds. She also tried to kill Link's ancestor, Raven. She ultimately left Nayru willingly to possess Queen Ambi after Link convinced her to ignore the possessed Nayru's advice. Ralph later threatened to kill Ambi to prevent the Black Tower from completion, but was stopped when Link hit her with a Mystery Seed from a Seed Shooter fired from the base of a tower. In this version the spider was her true form, and was destroyed by the combined attacks of Link, Ralph and Raven.

Trivia[edit]

  • Veran's design is very similar to that of the Twili, although they had not been introduced yet at the time of her appearance. The eye on her costume is similar to other eye symbols that are used by Agahnim and the Sheikah.
