Rauru is one of the Six Sages who was featured in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Background[edit]
Rauru was a wise man who functioned as the Sage of Light. He was the last of the ancient sages whom had built the Temple of Time to protect the entrance to the Sacred Realm. He isolated himself within the Sacred Realm and watched over the Triforce while dwelling within the Temple of Light, which was located at the center of the Sacred Realm.
When the Hero of Time began his journey, Rauru began to follow him in the form of an owl known as Kaepora Gaebora. After Link pulled the Master Sword and was put into a seven-year slumber, Rauru kept him safe within the Chamber of Sages, the only place safe from Ganondorf. When Link finally awoke, Rauru told him of all that had changed. He granted Link the Light Medallion and sent him out to seek the five new sages.
When all the sages were gathered, Rauru worked with them to create a rainbow bride to Ganon's Castle and later to seal Ganondorf in the Dark Realm. Rauru was not seen with the other sages in the ending, and his fate remains unknown.
Other Appearances[edit]
Other Media[edit]
- Rauru makes a small appearance in the Ocarina of Time manga which follows the game events. He is additionally said to have been one of the sages who made the Temple of Time into the path to the Sacred Realm long ago. It is also stated that his body is gone and thus he does not exist outside of the Chamber of Sages.
Trivia[edit]
- Rauru shares his name with a town in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. This was done to increase a sense of history in the series and comes with the implication that the town was named after the sage.
- The name of Rauru was also used for a character in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, who was part of the Zonai race and was depicted as the first king of Hyrule. He also had light-based powers, similar to the Hylian Rauru, and he led an incarnation of the sages. It is unclear what possible connection there could be between the two Raurus beyond their shared name, element and connection to sages.
- Rauru's connection to Kaepora Gaebora was implied within Ocarina of Time by one of the Gossip Stones stating that Kaepora Gaebora is actually an ancient sage. This was confirmed years later within the Hyrule Historia, which stated that he used this form to watch over Link before he entered the Sacred Realm (presumably because he was trapped there) [1]. It remains uncertain whether or not Rauru was Kaepora Gaebora in the owl's other appearances.
- Auru, a character similar in name and physical features (thus a possible relative) appears in Twilight Princess.
- In Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, several areas within the Great Hyrule Forest region are named after him: the Rauru Hillside and the Rauru Settlement Ruins that it overlooks.
