Debut Pokémon: Gold/Silver Versions

Will is a skilled Pokémon trainer who is the first member of the Elite Four to be battled in Pokémon: Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions. He specializes in Psychic-type Pokémon.

Background

Will claimed to have trained all around the world in order to make his psychic Pokémon powerful. This eventually led to him being accepted to Kanto and Johto's shared Elite Four, replacing Lorelei as the first member. He thought that he could only get better from there and did not consider losing to be an option. He was adorned with a mask and formal clothing.

He was the first member of the Elite Four battled by Ethan/Lyra in Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver. After being defeated, Will was shocked, but he decided to remain committed to his training. He was set on continuing to battle others until he was above all other trainers.

Pokémon Roster

Will has the following Pokémon in Gold, Silver and Crystal, as well as HeartGold and SoulSilver:

In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Will uses the following Pokémon during rematches:

In Other Pokémon Games

Will appeared in Pokémon Stadium 2 as the first opponent of the Elite Four within the Johto Gym Leader Castle. He uses Clefable, Kadabra, Exeggutor, Jynx, Xatu and Girafarig in R1, and in R2 he uses Hypno, Chansey, Electabuzz, Flareon, Xatu and Mantine. He also appeared as the ninth opponent in Pokémon Puzzle Challenge, with a Jynx as his Pokémon.

In Pokémon Masters EX, Will and his Xatu appeared as a playable sync pair that could be recruited at random through the game's Sync Pair Scout feature. Within the Main Story, he appeared as an opponent in Chapter 25, where he was teamed up with Karen and Grimsley, and they were defeated by Scottie/Bettie's team during the finals of the Pokémon Masters League. He was also featured as an opponent in the "Shining Star" Story Event. He was seen in the audience at Elesa's fashion show and was confused for a member of Team Break, due to the mask her wore. Even after they realized their misunderstanding, Elesa and the others decided to battle him anyway, to test themselves against an Elite Four member. After being defeated, Will continued to clarify that he was not a Team Break member and explained that he constantly dealt with such misunderstandings since he arrived on Pasio. Regardless, he looked forward to battling Elesa again. Will was also featured as an opponent for the Johto Challenge of the Champion Stadium mode, which replicated the second generation's Elite Four line-up.

Other Appearances

Other Media

  • Will appears in the Pokémon Adventures manga, where he was among the children whom the Mask of Ice raised as his loyal servants, with Karen as his partner. Apparently instead of being kidnapped like the other children, they volunteered to be his pupils due to being prodigies at battles and being bored. Will is shown to have more jester-like attire, and during the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc, he and Karen control Ho-Oh and Lugia in battle with Silver and Green at the Ilex Forest under the Mask of Ice's orders, although he is ultimately defeated by Silver. Afterwards, they are recruited into Koga and Bruno's ragtag team of remnants from evil organizations looking for a better start, in a mirror of the second generation's Elite Four. The HeartGold/SoulSilver arc later confirms that they were officially acknowledged as the Johto Elite Four, and they ended up competing with Gold at the Pokéthlon.

Trivia

  • His English name likely refers to 'willpower'. His Japanese name is Itsuki, a play off of the Japanese name for the Japanese zelkova.
  • In Gold/Silver/Crystal, his room at the Pokémon League resembles Lorelei's in that it is an area surrounded by water. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, it is changed into a purple-tiled room surrounded by a dark chasm containing floating cube-like objects.
